#19 Women's Basketball Struggles Offensively in 60-48 Loss at Dowling

Jewel White logs double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds

OAKDALE, N.Y. (December 18, 2011) -- The No. 19 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team struggled offensively on Sunday and dropped a 60-48 decision to Dowling at the Dowling Gymnasium in Oakdale, N.Y. The Ravens fell to 6-3, while the Lions improved to a perfect 9-0 overall.

Franklin Pierce managed just 26 percent shooting from the field (15-of-57), including a 14-percent clip from behind the arc (3-of-21). Dowling fared better by converting on 41 percent (21-of-51) of its baskets, while also forcing the Ravens into 24 turnovers.

Sarah Schicher and Kelly Puwalski each netted a team-high 10 points for the Lions, while Schicher notched a double-double with 10 rebounds. All nine Lions that played in the game scored, including Rekik Worku and Connie Simmons as they added nine and eight points, respectively.

Junior forward Amanda Saab (Windham, N.H.) paced the Franklin Pierce offensive attack with a game-high 15 points, while senior center Jewel White (Worcester, Mass.) tallied a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. 

Franklin Pierce trailed 25-19 at halftime, but the Ravens scored the first five points of the second half to pull within one at 25-24. White had three points during the rally and sophomore guard Kate McDonald (Fall River, Mass.) added a basket.

The Ravens seemed to be taking the advantage, but Dowling countered by scoring eight-straight points to open up a 33-24 lead with 14:07 remaining in the game. Puwalski and Worku each netted three points during the run as Dowling would never trail the rest of the way. Dowling opened up a 14-point lead three minutes later at 40-26 on a Kristen McMahon three-pointer.

Franklin Pierce tried to chip away at the deficit and did pull to within five at 42-37 with a little under seven minutes remaining after a three-point play on a layup and free throw by Saab. Again, Dowling had an answer and scored the next six points to open up another double-digit advantage and seal the win. Seja Gamble had four points during the clinching surge.

Franklin Pierce did outrebound the Lions by a count of 38-31, but the Ravens were not able to convert on many second-chance points.

The first half was tightly contested, but Dowling was able to score five of period's final seven points to open up the six-point lead at halftime.

Franklin Pierce returns to action on Jan 3 when the the Ravens play host to Southern Connecticut State at 5:30 p.m. in The Fieldhouse in Rindge.
