#14 Women's Basketball Tops Dowling 77-64 for Second-Straight Double-Figure Victory in NE-10/ECC Challenge
Giroud leads Ravens in scoring for second-straight game; White registers second-consecutive double-double
ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (November 14, 2010) -- The
No. 14-nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University women's
basketball team picked up its second double-digit win in as many
days on Sunday as the Ravens came from behind in the second half to
pull out a 77-64 win over Dowling on the final afternoon of the
Northeast-10/ECC Challenge at Quealy Gymnasium in Rockville Centre,
N.Y. The Ravens improved to 2-0, while Dowling dipped to 0-2.
For the second-straight game, Franklin Pierce was led offensively
by junior frontcourt players, Marielle Giroud (Martigny,
Switzerland) and Jewel White (Worcester,
Mass.). Giroud just missed her second-consecutive
double-double as she dropped in a game-high 19 points and ripped
down nine rebounds. Giroud has led Franklin Pierce in scoring in
each of the first two games this season. White did notch her second
double-double in as many contest as she recorded 18 points and 13
boards.
A pair of Ravens guards came off the bench to net double-digit
points, including junior Lekia Cowen (Hopedale,
Mass.) and sophomore Jordan Grant (Concord,
N.H.), who had 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Connie Simmons led a trio of Lions scoring in double-figures as
she netted 16 points. Seja Gamble followed with 15 points and
Shayla Felder chipped in 10.
Dowling held a 35-33 lead at halftime, but Giroud hit back-to-back
three's coming out of the locker room to put the Ravens on top by
four. The Ravens would never trail the rest of the way and they
eventually pushed their lead out to 10 (58-48) at the midway point
of the second half following a triple from Cowan.
Franklin Pierce led by as many as 17 points the rest of the way as
it cruised in for the victory. The Ravens held a 43-32 advantage on
the boards and shot 45 percent (25-of-56) from the field. They did
a solid job on the defensive end of the court, limiting Dowling to
just 37 percent (22-of-60) shooting for the game, including just 29
percent in the second 20 minutes.
The first half saw four lead changes as Franklin Pierce built a
28-18 lead midway through the period. However, Dowling closed out
the rest of the half by scoring 17 of the final 22 points to take
the slim two-point lead into the intermission.
Franklin Pierce returns to action Wednesday night when it travels
to face Stonehill in the Northeast-10 opener for both schools. Tip
