BOXSCORE

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (November 13, 2010) – The No. 14-nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University women’s basketball team opened its 2010-11 season on Saturday afternoon with a satisfying 73-61 win over Molloy in the Northeast-10/ECC Challenge in Rockville Centre, N.Y. The Ravens improved to 1-0, while Molloy dipped to 0-1.

A pair of Ravens, Jewel White (Worcester, Mass.) and Marielle Giroud (Martigny, Switzerland), notched double-doubles on the afternoon to lead the way to victory. Giroud totaled 16 points and 10 rebounds, while White tallied 13 points and 14 boards.

Two Ravens making their collegiate debuts on the afternoon scored in double-figures, including Brittany Martelle (Brookfield, Conn.) and Brooke Coderre (Woonsocket, R.I.), who had 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Franklin Pierce led by as many as 20 midway through the first half as it held a 35-15 advantage. However, Molloy bridged the first and second halves with a 38-16 run to take a 53-51 lead with 8:56 remaining on a three-pointer from Ashley Addison.

The lead for Molloy was short-lived as it was now Franklin Pierce’s turn to mount a run of its own. The Ravens used the next five-and-half minutes to score 16 of the next 21 points to retake the lead at 67-58. The run was aided by Martelle scoring the final five points on a three-pointer and a driving layup.

That run put the game out of reach as Franklin Pierce converted its free throws in the closing minutes to seal the win.

The Ravens shot 48-percent (25-of-52) from the floor, including going 50-percent (7-of-14) from three-point range. Franklin Pierce also owned a 41-29 advantage on the glass, led by the strong efforts of White and Giroud.

Franklin Pierce scored 11 of the game’s first 14 points, including a triple from rookie guard Kate McDonald (Fall River, Mass.), who had eight points and six assists in her collegiate debut. The Ravens used a brief 6-0 run midway through the first half to build its largest lead of the game at 35-15. Tiffany Johnson (St. Albans, Vt.), Lekia Cowen (Hopedale, Mass.) and White all had layups during the run. Cowan was making her Ravens’ debut after transferring from Division I Bryant University during the off-season.

Franklin Pierce returns to action Sunday afternoon when it takes on Dowling on the final day of the Challenge at 1 p.m.
