Southern Connecticut Coasts Past Franklin Pierce, 74-47

Owls out-score Ravens by 20 in second half behind 56.3-percent shooting

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (January 10, 2004) - Southern Connecticut State University used a big second-half run to break open a seven-point game at the break and coast to a 74-47 victory over Franklin Pierce in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball action at the Moore Fieldhouse this afternoon.

Southern Connecticut scored the first seven points of the contest and it led by that very margin at the intermission (27-20). The Owls busted the game open in the second half behind 56.3-percent (18-32) shooting from the field, including six-of-eight (75%) from three-point range, compared to 38.1% (8-21) shooting for Franklin Pierce, which was 0-7 from three-point range for the afternoon.

Junior guard Kim Jackle (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) led Southern Connecticut with 23 points, aided by 4-7 shooting from beyond the arc and a 9-9 effort from the free-throw line, to go with four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Senior Jenese Wilcox (Port Chester, N.Y./Ursuline) registered 21 points on 10-13 shooting from the floor to go with a game-high six rebounds and three steals. Classmate Jessica Kolakoski (Wolcott, Conn./Wolcott) chipped in 11 points, four boards and two thefts.

Freshman forward Danielle D'Ettorre (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario/St. Mary's) led all scorers and was the lone Franklin Pierce player in double-figures as she finished with 25 points on 8-14 shooting from the field to go with a 9-11 effort at the line. She also grabbed three rebounds. Senior Susan Ocitti (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge R&L) chipped in five points and three rebounds, while freshman Mollie Stelmack (New Westminster, British Columbia/New Westminster) grabbed a team-best four boards.

The Ravens were hampered by 23 turnovers and shot just 36.6% (15-41) from the field for the contest.

Southern scored the first ten points of the second half to take a 17-point advantage with 17:38 to play and opened the stanza with a 17-4 run overall to increase its lead to 20-points 3:52 in and never looked back the rest of the way.

Franklin Pierce (6-7, 2-7 NE-10) returns home on Wednesday night when it hosts College of Saint Rose at 5:30 p.m. Southern Connecticut (10-4, 5-4 NE-10) hosts UMass Lowell on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
