Franklin Pierce Women’s Fours Strong at N.H. Rowing Championships

Raven crews post fourth and sixth place finishes; men place 18th

 


Franklin Pierce's A-crew turned in a fourth place finish at the New Hampshire Championships over the weekend.

 

HOOKSETT, N.H. (October 15, 2008) - The Franklin Pierce men's and women's rowing teams competed at the New Hampshire Championships regatta on Saturday on the Merrimack River.

Franklin Pierce's women were exceptionally strong at the event as both fours qualified for the grand final in separate qualifying heats and nearly both placed in the top five. The Ravens A-crew posted a time of 17:57 to finish fourth in the final, after qualifying with a time of 17:57.46 to place third in the first of two heat races. Simmons College won the event with a time of 16:58, while Bowdoin College took second (17:27) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology third (17:40).

Rowing for Franklin Pierce was senior Cassandra Ela (Lancaster, Mass./Nashoba Regional) at stroke, sophomore Mairecait Binienda (Worcester, Mass./Doherty) in the two-seat, sophomore Mary Holland (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin Academy) at three-seat and senior Vanessa Leon (Lenox, Mass./Lenox Memorial) in the bow, with sophomore Julie Waxman (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) as the coxswain.

 


The women's B-crew also had a strong day, placing sixth in the grand final.

 

Franklin Pierce's B-crew posted a time of 18:16 - just six seconds behind fifth-place Amherst College (18:10). The Ravens qualified for the final with a time of 18:16.06 for a second-place finish in the second heat race. Rowing for the B-crew were sophomore Brigit Arell (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) at stroke, freshman Katie Dougherty (Lansdowne, Pa./Archbishop Prendergast) in the two-seat, freshman Eric Tomaszewski (Nashua, N.H./Academy of Notre Dame) at three seat and freshman Lesley Cutting (Glenville, N.Y./Niskayuna) in the bow, with junior Kristen Sheridan (Auburn, N.H./Manchester Memorial) as the coxswain.

Franklin Pierce's men's varsity four posted an 18th-place finish with a time of 17:01.58 to finish ahead of crews from Wentworth Institute of Technology and the University of Massachusetts Lowell. MIT won the event with a time of 14:39.03. Rowing for the Ravens were senior Josh Marker (Lockport, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) at stroke, junior Patrick Brosnan (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greely) in the two seat, sophomore Michael Parthum (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) at three seat and freshman Tavis Wolfram (Middletown, Conn./Middletown) in the bow, with junior Alex Edwards (Greenville, R.I./Smithfield) as the coxswain.

Franklin Pierce is back on the water on Saturday when both men's and women's fours compete in the 44th Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.
