Women place program-best 14th in Collegiate Fours event
Men finish 31st in their Collegiate Fours event 

 


Franklin Pierce's women's varsity four placed a program-best 14th in the Collegiate Fours event at the 44th Head of the Charles Regatta on Saturday.

 

BOSTON, Mass. (October 19, 2008) - The Franklin Pierce men's and women's rowing teams competed with mixed results at the 44th Head of the Charles Regatta on Saturday.

Franklin Pierce's women's varsity four continued its strong fall season as it placed 14th out of 34 crews in the Women's Collegiate Fours event with a time of 20:06.783 over the challenging three-mile course. The 14th-place finish marks a program best for the women's four, besting a 20th-place finish for the Ravens in 2004. Western Rowing Club won the event with a time of 18:54.730, edging second-place Simmons College (19:02.926), while William Smith College took third (19:09.965).

Franklin Pierce finished tops among the three Division II crews in the event (25th-place UMass Lowell & 32nd-place Assumption College) and finished ahead of crews from the University of Chicago (15th), Hamilton College (16th), United State Coast Guard Academy (17th) and rivals Bowdoin College (22nd). Rowing for the Ravens ware senior Cassandra Ela (Lancaster, Mass./Nashoba Regional) at stroke, sophomore Mary Holland (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin Academy) in the two-seat, sophomore Mairecait Binienda (Worcester, Mass./Doherty)at three-seat and senior Vanessa Leon (Lenox, Mass./Lenox Memorial) in the bow, with sophomore Julie Waxman (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) as the coxswain.

Franklin Pierce placed 31st in the Men's Collegiate Fours event, completing the three-mile course in 20:43.599 after incurring a 1:10 penalty. The University of Michigan won the event with a time of 16:26.721, while Trinity College took second (16:27.281) and Fordham University was third (16:28.949). Rowing for the Ravens were senior Josh Marker (Lockport, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) at stroke, junior Patrick Brosnan (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greely) in the two seat, sophomore Michael Parthum (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) at three seat and freshman Tavis Wolfram (Middletown, Conn./Middletown) in the bow, with junior Alex Edwards (Greenville, R.I./Smithfield) as the coxswain.

Franklin Pierce concludes its fall season next Sunday at the Clark University Duels on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester.
