PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (May 8, 2009) - The Franklin Pierce women's varsity four turned in a ninth-place finish in its opening day heat to qualify for Saturday morning's semifinal race at the 2009 Dad Vail National Regatta on the Schuykill River this afternoon. The Ravens men's varsity four did not qualify for tomorrow's races.

Franklin Pierce's women's varsity four completed the weather-shortened 1500-meter course in 5:16.095 to post the ninth-fastest time of the day. The Ravens will be back in the water tomorrow morning for its semifinal race against Brandeis University, College of William & Mary, Amherst College, Mercyhurst College and Oklahoma City University. The top two in that race will qualify for the grand final later in the afternoon.

Bowdoin posted the top time in today's qualifying trials with a time of 5:08.399, followed by Emory University (5:12.799) and William & Mary (5:12.927) as the top ten finished within eight seconds of each other. Rowing for Franklin Pierce were senior Cassandra Ela (Lancaster, Mass./Nashoba Regional) at stroke, sophomore Brigit Arell (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) in the three seat, sophomore Mairecait Binienda (Worcester, Mass./Doherty) at the two-seat and freshman Lesley Cutting (Glenville, N.Y./Niskayuna) in the bow, with senior Jessica Ward (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) as the coxswain.

Franklin Pierce's men's varsity four completed the 1500-meter course in 4:51.311 to finish 39th out of 54 crews at the event. Emory posted the top time in today's qualifying heats with a time of 4:29.291. Rowing for the Ravens were senior Josh Marker (Lockport, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) at stroke, junior Ian Randall (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) in the three-seat, junior Patrick Brosnan (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greely) in the two seat and junior Brett DiCrescenzo (Haddon Township, N.J./Camden Catholic) at the bow, with junior Alexandra Edwards (Greenville, R.I./Smithfield) as the coxswain.

Freshmen Brad Krivelow (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead) and Joe Lacava (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) competed in the men's pair event and placed 25th with a time of 6:37.087.
