Harris Earns 200m New England Title, Men’s Track & Field in Action in Multiple Locales
BOSTON (February 5, 2022) -- In Friday's heat races, sophomore Stephen Harris (Billerica, Mass.) turned in New England's fastest time in the 200-meter dash. He backed things up on Saturday at Reggie Lewis Center, as he claimed the New England title in the event, with a school-record run of 21.49 seconds. Harris led the way on the day for the Franklin Pierce University men's track & field teams, which was in action in multiple places in Beantown. The Ravens had athletes at both the NEICAAA Championships, and at the BU Track & Tennis Center, where Boston University was hosting the Bruce Lehane Scarlet and White Invite.
The story of the day was Harris though, as he became the 12th athlete in program history to claim a New England title, as well as the second of the weekend, as he followed up on the high-jump crown earned by senior Paola Brena (Queretaro, Mexico) on Friday. Harris' time of 21.49 was not only good enough to better his own school record from a week ago, but moved him up to 18th in the nation in the event.
Elsewhere at New Englands on Saturday, the Ravens had one more in action on the track, as well as a pair who took part in the shot put. On the track, in the mile, sophomore Wondu Summa (Burlington, Mass.) claimed All-New England honors with a time of 4:14.42, which was good enough for a third-place finish. In the shot put, it was 10th and 11th for sophomore Sal Lando (Sterling, Mass.) and senior Croix Albee (Trenton, Maine), respectively. The two were separated by only a centimeter, as the former threw the shot 14.52 meters, while the latter had a heave of 14.51 meters.
Meanwhile, Franklin Pierce was busy on the track at BU during the Scarlet and White Invite. In the 60-meter dash, sophomore Nathan Rinaldi (Bristol, Conn.) was 32nd (7.32), sophomore Angel Gonzalez (North Andover, Mass.) was 40th (7.41) and freshman Rodsir Vaughn (Darien, Conn.) was 57th (8.14). Rinaldi doubled back to finish 47th in the 200-meter dash (22.50), where he was narrowly edged by senior Devin Jones (Manchester, N.H.) in 45th (22.48).
Per usual, there was a whole brigade of Ravens in the 800 meters. Sophomore Ryan Walker (Seabrook, N.H.) led the way in 23rd (1:53.98), and he was followed by Summa in 48th (1:57.16), sophomore Thomas Darrah (Thetford, Vt.) in 57th (1:58.12), sophomore Ryan Outerbridge (Paget, Bermuda) in 62nd (1:59.05), graduate student Sebastien Vicary (Ulceby, United Kingdom) in 65th (1:59.68) and sophomore Evan McNeice (Wethersfield, Conn.) in 66th (2:00.24).
As for the field events at BU, sophomore Conor Nordmann (Bethel, Conn.) took 11th in the pole vault (4.20m) and senior Ethan Pezzullo (Bristol, R.I.) was 16th in the long jump (6.21m).
Franklin Pierce is headed back to BU next weekend, with select athletes in action at the David Hemery Valentine Invite on Feb. 11-12. Meanwhile, the rest of the team will head to MIT on Saturday, for the Gordon Kelly Invitational, as the Ravens go through their final tune-ups before the Northeast-10 Conference Championships.
