Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (February 1, 2020) -- The Franklin Pierce men's hockey team took to the road on Saturday afternoon for the second game of a weekend home-and-home series against Northeast-10 Conference opponent Stonehill College, but could not improve on Friday night's tie with the Skyhawks. Instead, senior goaltender Matthew Schoen piled up 46 saves and Stonehill poured in the final five goals of the game to deal the Ravens a deflating, 7-2 loss at Foxboro Sports Center.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 11-9-3 (5-5-2 NE10) and nets just one point in a weekend series against one of its closest competitors in the race for the NE10 postseason. With the win, Stonehill improves to 7-9-4 (4-5-3 NE10), and is now just one point behind the Ravens and Southern New Hampshire, who are tied for the fourth and final NE10 Championship berth.

The first period was scoreless, with Franklin Pierce getting the majority of scoring opportunities, as the Ravens put 19 shots on net, to just 10 for Stonehill. The Ravens finished the game with 48 shots on net, compared to 33 for the Skyhawks, but were only able to get two past Schoen.

Scoring opened early in the second with a power-play opportunity for the Skyhawks. Junior defenseman Sean Conley sent a pass across the blue line to senior defenseman Zachary Frament, who walked and shot the puck by Franklin Pierce junior goaltender Ian Wallace (West Islip, N.Y.) to give Stonehill the lead just 3:12 into the period.

The Skyhawks would extend their lead to two just under five minutes later, at the 8:01 mark, with a goal from senior forward Connor Jewett. Stonehill wound up with a 3-on-1, with Jewett carrying the puck into the zone and sending it to the far post for freshman forward Brendan Nehmer. Nehmer found senior forward Cameron Wright, who returned it to Jewett for the tap in.

Not long after, the Ravens were able to get on the board with a goal of their own on at 10:58, courtesy of sophomore forward Chris Stevenson (Arvada, Colo.). Fellow sophomore forward Ryan Gorbett (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) moved the puck over to senior defenseman Mark Indelicato (Pembroke, Mass.) at the top of the blue line. Indelicato fired a shot onto Schoen from there, and the rebound popped out to a waiting Stevenson, who spun around and put the puck in the back of the net. It was his 13th goal of the season and ran his point streak to 10 games (8-7-15).

The Ravens were able to tie the game on a power-play goal from senior forward Cameron Shepardson (Albany, N.Y.), who carried the puck from the corner to the middle of the slot before putting a shot over the glove hand of Schoen for his second goal of the season.

The Skyhawks took back their two-goal lead before the end of the second period on a goal from Wright at 13:36 -- just 24 seconds after the Ravens had tied the game -- and a power-play tally from sophomore forward Charles Page at 19:54.

After giving up a goal with six seconds to play in the second, the Ravens surrendered another just 38 seconds into the third stanza, the seventh of the season for junior forward Kayser Raei, to make it 5-2 and all but put the game out of reach. Franklin Pierce could not stay out of the box either, as the Ravens were forced to kill three third-period power plays, which helped short-circuit any hopes of a comeback. Stonehill added an empty-net tally from senior forward Nicholas Godin at 18:07, and sophomore forward Mike Seoane put one more past Wallace for good measure, at 19:46, to create the 7-2 final.

Wallace (6-5-2) surrendered six goals against 32 shots and finished with 26 saves in the loss for Franklin Pierce. Meanwhile, at the other end of the ice, Schoen (6-7-3) piled up 46 saves against 48 shots to help Stonehill pick up two points with the win.

The Ravens are back in action on the road with a non-conference matchup against first-year program Albertus Magnus on Tuesday, Feb. 4. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Ralph Walker Skating Rink in New Haven, Conn.
