Men’s Ice Hockey Posts Shutout Win at Saint Michael’s, 3-0
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (February 16, 2018) – A first-period goal from senior forward Evan Marek (Enfield, Conn.) -- his first tally of the season -- would stand up the rest of the way on the road on Friday night for the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team. The Ravens picked up two more goals in the second period to pad the lead and went on to a 3-0 win over Saint Michael's in Northeast-10 Conference play at Cairns Arena. Sophomore forward Alex Lester (Methuen, Mass.) had a goal and an assist for Franklin Pierce, while sophomore defenseman Sean Munzing (Beverly, Mass.) dished out two assists for his first career multiple-point game.
With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 7-17-1 (3-10-1 NE10), while Saint Michael's falls to 13-9-2 (8-5-1 NE10). The Ravens will play at Saint Michael's once again tomorrow to close out their season. Opening faceoff is set for 4 p.m. at Cairns Arena.
Marek's first goal of his senior season would go down as a game-winning goal, as he opened the scoring with the only goal the Ravens would need at 18:46 of the first period. He finished things off with a one-timer as he received a feed from Munzing while cutting through the left-wing circle. Sophomore defenseman Mark Indelicato (Pembroke, Mass.) picked up an assist on the play as well.
Franklin Pierce then struck once on either side of the midpoint of the second stanza to create the 3-0 final. At 9:32, sophomore forward Cameron Shepardson (Albany, N.Y.) put home his 11th of the season from the middle of the slot, off of assists from junior forward Nicholas Fotiu (Falmouth, Mass.) and Lester.
Lester then capped the scoring at 13:05, with his 11th of the season as well. Munzing had the initial shot on the play, but it was blocked by the defense. The carom came straight to Lester in the right circle, and he buried a one-timer from there to make it a 3-0 game. Senior forward Jonathan Haun (Buffalo, N.Y.) tacked on the secondary assist on the play.
Senior goaltender Tom McGuckin (Clayton, N.J.) faced a barrage of rubber on the night, as the Ravens were outshot to the tune of 46-24 over the course of the game. He was equal to the task though, as he stopped all 46 shots to pick up the win (4-13-1) and post his fifth career shutout. At the other end of the ice, junior netminder Chris Johnson (7-4-0) finished with 21 saves against 24 shots in the losing effort for Saint Michael's.
