Men’s Golf Finishes Second at Yellow Jacket Invitational
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (April 19, 2022) -- With the team's fourth straight solid round on Tuesday, the Franklin Pierce University men's golf team was able to secure a second-place finish at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, hosted by American International, at the par-72, 6507-yard Ledges Golf Club. After a bit of an up-and-down season, the performance in the regular-season finale is expected to lift the Ravens squarely into the conversation for an NCAA Championship berth. Junior Michael Sosik (Fiskdale, Mass.) was the top-finishing individual for Franklin Pierce, in a tie for third.
It was a second-round 77 (+5) for Sosik, who finished at 72-77--149 (+5) and tied for third with Dominican (N.Y.) sophomore Alexander Lundvall, just one shot off the lead. The Ravens would wind up putting four golfers inside the top 10 of the 60-player field. Sophomore Thomas Hickey (Moultonborough, N.H.) fired Tuesday's low round with a two-under 70, to finish tied-sixth at 81-70--151 (+7). Freshman Peter Wurszt (Wilbraham, Mass.) and sophomore Jake Berkio (Ashburnham, Mass.) were both part of a six-way tie for eighth at 152 (+8). Freshman Jack Patterson (Franklin, Mass.) rounded out Franklin Pierce's five-player lineup at 81-79--160 (+16) and was tied-31st.
Tuesday's four best rounds added up to a 304 (+16) for the Ravens, which was five shots off of Monday's performance, but still good enough to secure second in an 11-team field, at 299-304--603 (+27). The first-round leader, Franklin Pierce was passed on Tuesday by Post, which went 300-299--599 (+23) to chalk up a four-shot victory. The Ravens were 11 shots clear of third-place Bentley, which checked in at 302-312--614 (+38).
Individually, a pair of Post players shared medalist honors at 148 (+4), one shot in front of Sosik at Lundvall. Sophomore Ethan Phillips shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday to go 76-72--148 and move up 13 spots to share the win with senior teammate Riley Card, who was consistent at 74-74--148. Behind Sosik and Lundvall, Post sophomore Ian Wivestad rounded out the top five at 74-76--150 (+6).
The tournament wrapped up the regular season for the Ravens, who will now await word on an NCAA bid. The NCAA Championship field will be announced later this month.
