Men's Golf Turns in Strong Final Round to Place Fifth at AIC Invitational

Second wave of Raven golfers compete at Worcester State Invitational on Tuesday
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 20,
2010) – The Franklin Pierce University golf team
shot a final round 27-over par, 315, to finish in fifth place out
of 10 teams at the 2010 American International Invitational at the
Springfield Country Club in Springfield, Mass. The Ravens, who sat
in seventh place entering Tuesday’s final round, finished
with a two-round total of 639 (+63). AIC won the tournament by
carding a 608 (+32).
Freshman Ian Landry (Loudon, N.H.) was the highest Franklin Pierce finisher in the individual standings as he placed 14th with a two-round total of 158 (+14). After struggling with an 82 on Monday, Landry rebounded with a strong four-over par 76 to move up into the top-15 finish. It marked the third time in as many spring tournaments this season that Landry finished among the top-15 golfers in the standings.
Sophomore Brian Fleckles (Sandwich, Mass.) was the other Raven to finish among the top-25 as he tied for 22nd with a 160 (+14) over the two rounds, including a final round five-over, 77.
Senior Peter Panopoulos (Rindge, N.H.) finished tied for 28th after he shot a final round 81 (+9) to finish with a two-round total of 162 (+18). Sophomore William Powers (Southbury, Conn.) and senior Brandon Weiner (Marlboro, N.J.) finished in a tie for 31st with a two-round total of 164 (+20). Powers shot a final round 86 (+14), while Weiner carded a solid 81 (+9) on the afternoon.
The other half of the Franklin Pierce golf squad competed in the Worcester State Invitational on Tuesday, and finished 13th out of 16 teams with a +64 (352). Trinity College won the tournament with 10-over par 298.
Freshman Tyler Merrill (Litchfield, N.H.) shot an 86 (+14) to tie for 38th, while junior Justin Haapala (Danielson, Conn.) carded an 87 (+15) to place 43rd. Junior Phil Girard (Billerica, Mass.) (88, +16), Jeff Gloshinski (91, +19) and senior Derek Flodin (Wilmington, Mass.) (94, +22) rounded out the Ravens in the field as they finished in 47th, 61st and 69th place, respectively.
The Ravens return to competition on Friday when they compete in the Elms College Invitational at 11 a.m. at the Chicopee Country Club in Chicopee, Mass.
