BOXSCORE
RINDGE, N.H. (November 15, 2009) – The
Franklin Pierce University men’s basketball team opened its
2009-10 season on Sunday evening with a 79-68 win over Lesley
College in The Fieldhouse in Rindge. Franklin Pierce improved to
1-0 on the season, while Lesley dipped to 0-1.
Senior forward Terrell Ray (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was
one of three Ravens to record double-digit rebounds, as he logged
an incredible double-double of 22 points and 20 rebounds.
The other two Ravens to notched double-figure rebounds were junior
guard Kinard Dozier (Dedham, Mass.) and freshman
guard Ryan Creighton (Greenport, N.Y.). Dozier
just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 boards, while
Creighton turned in a strong rookie debut with seven points and 11
rebounds.
Franklin Pierce out-rebounded the Lynx by a whopping total of
65-28, including a 27-9 advantage on the offensive glass which led
to a 30-4 edge in second-chance points.
Junior guard Jeff Manchester (Gorham, Maine)
joined Ray as the team’s other double-figure scorer as he
netted 17 points. The Ravens shot 45.7 percent from the field
(32-of-70).
Four players scored in double-digits for Lesley, including John
Sanchez (13 points), Jesus Trejo (11 points), Bryant Itonyo (10
points) and Juan Nieves (10 points).
Franklin Pierce jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead in the opening
four-and-a-half minutes, but Lesley didn’t fold and clawed
back to within one at 7-6 on a layup by DJ Dauphin with 14:25
remaining.
Dozier hit a pair of layups during an ensuing 6-0 run by Franklin
Pierce to take a 13-6 lead with 11:47 to go in the half.
Lesley kept up the pressure and three minutes later used a jumper
by Sanchez to take a 19-18 advantage. Franklin Pierce responded and
scored 14 of the next 18 points to open up a 32-23 lead with 4:04
to go until halftime. The run was sparked by a three from
Manchester and capped with a driving layup by Mike Barrow
(Mattapan, Mass.).
The Ravens would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way. They
slowly built their advantage to double-digits at 44-30 at the 1:13
mark on back-to-back three-pointers from freshman guard
Eric-Jean Guillaume (Stamford, Conn.).
Franklin Pierce held a 44-32 lead at the intermission, aided in
large part by its 35-11 rebounding advantage. Plus, the Ravens were
able to score in the post and held a 24-12 edge in points in the
paint.
The Ravens led by as many as 17 points in the second half, as
Lesley could never pull within single-digits.
Ray scored the first six points for Franklin Pierce in the second
20 minutes as it was part of his 16-point, nine-rebound effort in
the second half. His play, especially on the glass, prevented
Lesley from getting extended looks and shots at the basket.
Franklin Pierce returns to action on Wednesday night when it plays
host to Post at 7 p.m. in The Fieldhouse. For more information on
