RINDGE, N.H. (April 18, 2010) – Five Franklin Pierce student-athletes were recently named to the 2010 Northeast-10 Winter Academic All-Conference team in their respective sports. Junior guard Kinard Dozier (Dedham, Mass.) earned a spot on the men’s basketball squad, while senior standout Johannah Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England) and junior guard Cynthia Gaudet (Coventry, R.I.) were named to the women’s basketball team. In ice hockey, senior forward Phil LaBreck (Thornton, N.H.) and junior forward Sean Woodring (Rogue River, Oregon) each earned a spot on the academic squad. Franklin Pierce was tied for the most academic selections in each of the three sports listed above.
Dozier earned a spot on the winter academic team for the second-consecutive season by posting a 3.38 grade point average in his major of accounting finance. Dozier had a tremendous junior campaign in 2009-10, as he earned a spot on the Northeast-10 All-Conference Third-Team after averaging 15.2 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. His scoring average ranked first on the Franklin Pierce team and 13th in the conference, while his rebounding average ranked second on the squad and ninth in the conference. Dozier also ranked ninth in the NE-10 in steals (1.81 spg) and 11th in free throw percentage (79.3%).
Leedham was named to the academic squad for the third-straight year after posting a 3.38 GPA in her major of sports & recreation management. Leedham had a terrific senior season in Rindge as she established herself as one of the finest players at all levels in women’s college basketball history. She garnered 2010 national player-of-the-year awards from three different agencies, including the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), as it marked the second time in her career she was named the nation’s top player by the national organization. Leedham, who led the nation in scoring this year at 26.9 points per game, finished her career with 3,050 points, which is the highest mark in NCAA Division II history and the fifth most across all divisions in women’s college basketball history. Leedham was also recognized at the national level for her academic work this season as she was named a Second-Team Academic All-American by ESPN The Magazine.
Gaudet took her place on the conference’s academic team for the second time in as many seasons after posting a 3.94 GPA in biology. Gaudet put together a terrific season for Franklin Pierce as she was named to the NE-10 All-Conference Third-Team after averaging 11.4 points and ranking fourth in the league in assists (4.53 apg). Her assists-per-game average ranked 48th throughout the entire nation at the Division II level. Gaudet was also named to ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-District I First-Team back in February for her impressive work in the classroom.
LaBreck made his way onto the academic squad for the third-straight year as he notched a 3.86 GPA in his major of political science. LaBreck was the captain of a young Ravens ice hockey squad in 2009-10, which set a program record for most wins in a single season (7) and hosted a Northeast-10 quarterfinal playoff game for just the second time in school history. He scored a career-high tying 12 goals and assisted on 10 others for 22 points, marking the third-consecutive season he topped 20 points.
Woodring gained a spot on the league’s academic team for the second-consecutive season after he posted a 3.91 GPA in his major of biology. He scored three goals and assisted on five others for eight points this season.
To be eligible for selection to the academic all-conference teams, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: 1) participated in at least half of the team’s competitions and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and 3) completed at least one academic year at his/her current institution.
