First-Half Tallies Lift Field Hockey at Southern Connecticut State, 2-0
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (September 16, 2017) – A pair of goals in the first 13 minutes were the difference on Saturday afternoon, as the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team posted a 2-0 win on the road at Southern Connecticut State in Northeast-10 Conference play. Senior forward Carly Canavan (Kingston, N.Y.) and senior midfielder Reagan Moulton (Baldwinville, Mass.) provided the goals, as the Ravens scored their first Conference win since Oct. 30, 2015.
With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 4-2 (1-0 NE10) and has already eclipsed last season's win total. With the loss, SCSU falls to 1-5 (0-1 NE10). Franklin Pierce controlled play throughout Saturday afternoon, to the tune of advantages of 22-12 in shot attempts, 15-7 in shots on goal and 13-4 in penalty corners.
The Ravens would use a pair of early markers to cruise to the 2-0 victory. Canavan opened the scoring just 4:15 into the proceedings, with her third goal of the season, as she put home the rebound of her own shot. It was the 29th career goal for Canavan, who now sits just five behind Tia Levins '12 for the program's all-time record. Canavan also now sits second on the school's all-time points list, with 67, just six behind Levins.
Moulton provided the game's other goal, in the 13th minute. She slotted a shot inside the left post from just above the penalty spot for her third goal of the campaign. Junior forward Dayna Kowesky (Leominster, Mass.) picked up the assist on the play.
Senior goalkeeper Meaghan Williams (Salem, N.H.) stopped all seven shots on her cage to post her second shutout of the season, as well as the ninth of her career, which ties her with Brittany Nyzio '12 for the program's all-time record. Williams (4-1) now has 24 career wins, which is one behind Nyzio's school record of 25.
At the other end of the field, sophomore netminder Brianna Craft (1-5) stopped 13 of 15 shots on goal in defeat for SCSU.
The Ravens return to the field on Wednesday, Sept. 20, when they travel to Southern New Hampshire for an NE10 contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Larkin Field in Manchester, N.H.
