RINDGE, N.H. (September 18,
2007) – Forward Alyson Webster scored her first
career goal with 4:06 remaining in regulation to lift Merrimack
College to a 3-2 victory over Franklin Pierce University in a
Northeast-10 Conference field hockey match at Sodexho Field on
Tuesday evening.
Graduate student Mary Beth Huszar (Greenville,
N.H./Mascenic Regional) and junior co-captain
Kayleigh Jaksina (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex)
both scored to give the Ravens one-goal leads, but each score was
matched by the Warriors and Merrimack scored the game-winner late
to escape with a win. Despite the score, Franklin Pierce controlled
play for much of the game, outshooting Merrimack by a 7-5 margin
and holding a 12-4 edge in penalty corners on the evening.
Huszar got the Ravens on the board at 21:31 with her fourth tally
of the season, scoring off a penalty corner. Jaksina and junior
Stephanie Howard (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) recorded
the assists.
Merrimack came out strong to begin the second half, earning two
quick penalty corners. On the second try, Jaclyn Germano (Westwood,
Mass./Williston-Northhampton) shot from the top of the circle and
beat freshman Tevis Hannington (Canton, Mass./Notre Dame
Academy) to tie the game.
Jaksina gave Franklin Pierce another lead at 52:11, as Howard
returned a penalty corner to Jaksina near the goal line and the
co-captain managed to somehow squeak the ball between goaltender
Amy Larrabee (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) and the near post from a
difficult angle.
Merrimack, however, scored twice in 6:23 to take the match. Kelly
Pasquantonio (Plainville, Mass./ King Philip) scored the equalizer
at 59:31, tipping in a cross-field pass at the left post, and
Webster followed by taking a feed from six yards out and finding
the back of the net at the 65:54 mark.
Franklin Pierce (0-8, 0-6 NE-10) will complete a brief two-game
homestand on Thursday evening with the team’s final
non-conference match of the year against Assumption at 6 p.m.
Merrimack (3-5, 3-2 NE-10) travels to Manchester, N.H., to take on
Saint Anselm on Thursday.
