FP Upsets No. 4 Stonehill in OT, 2-1
Jones nets gamewinner on breakaway with 2:17 left in first OT
WINCHENDON, Mass. (October 6, 2001) -
Franklin Pierce University shrugged off an overtime loss earlier
this week to upset Stonehill College, ranked No. 4 in this
week’s National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA)
Division II poll, 2-1 in overtime in Northeast-10 Conference field
hockey action at The Winchendon School this afternoon.
Sophomore Debbie Jones (Escondido,
Calif./Bushops) was sent in one-on-one with Stonehill
goalkeeper Cindy Pultz and tucked the ball into the net to lift the
Ravens to victory with 2:17 remaining in the first overtime.
Freshman Sara Lavway (Unity,
Maine/Mount View) set up the play with a pass that sent
Jones in for her team-leading sixth marker of the season.
Stonehill took an early lead just 3:02 into the match as sophomore
Alison Moore scored, assisted by senior Meghan O’Hara.
The Ravens answered right back just 6:21 later as Lavway scored a
goal of her own, assisted by junior Chrystean Page (Turner, Maine/Leavitt)
with 24:41 remaining in the first half.
The two sided remained scoreless for the remaining 59:41 of
regulation. Stonehill out-shot FP by a 20-16 margin, including 7-2
in the extra session.
FP junior goalkeeper Kasey
McClements (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) recorded 19 stops to
preserve the victory, while Pultz made six stops for the
Chieftains, who had their seven game winning streak snapped.
Franklin Pierce (5-8, 4-3 NE-10) returns to action next Saturday,
when it travels to Saint Michael’s College for a Conference
match at 1 p.m. Stonehill (10-2, 5-2 NE-10) hosts Merrimack College
on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
