FP Upsets No. 4 Stonehill in OT, 2-1

Jones nets gamewinner on breakaway with 2:17 left in first OT

WINCHENDON, Mass. (October 6, 2001) - Franklin Pierce University shrugged off an overtime loss earlier this week to upset Stonehill College, ranked No. 4 in this week’s National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, 2-1 in overtime in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action at The Winchendon School this afternoon.

Sophomore Debbie Jones (Escondido, Calif./Bushops) was sent in one-on-one with Stonehill goalkeeper Cindy Pultz and tucked the ball into the net to lift the Ravens to victory with 2:17 remaining in the first overtime. Freshman Sara Lavway (Unity, Maine/Mount View) set up the play with a pass that sent Jones in for her team-leading sixth marker of the season.

Stonehill took an early lead just 3:02 into the match as sophomore Alison Moore scored, assisted by senior Meghan O’Hara.

The Ravens answered right back just 6:21 later as Lavway scored a goal of her own, assisted by junior Chrystean Page (Turner, Maine/Leavitt) with 24:41 remaining in the first half.

The two sided remained scoreless for the remaining 59:41 of regulation. Stonehill out-shot FP by a 20-16 margin, including 7-2 in the extra session.

FP junior goalkeeper Kasey McClements (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) recorded 19 stops to preserve the victory, while Pultz made six stops for the Chieftains, who had their seven game winning streak snapped.

Franklin Pierce (5-8, 4-3 NE-10) returns to action next Saturday, when it travels to Saint Michael’s College for a Conference match at 1 p.m. Stonehill (10-2, 5-2 NE-10) hosts Merrimack College on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
