Baseball: Ravens Kick Off Week with Double Header Sweep Over Adelphi

 GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (3/25/2024) – The Franklin Pierce University baseball team brought out the brooms on Monday night, sweeping the Adelphi Panthers in Northeast-10 play with a 7-3 win in a 12-inning thriller and a controlling 10-6 win in 7 innings.

GAME ONE:  
HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • It took until the 5th inning for the fireworks to get started. Adelphi struck first as Alex Rende put the Panthers up 1-0 with an RBI single to center field.  
  • The Ravens responded with authority in the top of the 6th inning. Joey Acker (Upton, Mass.) drew a walk, then Eli Battipaglia (Cheshire, Conn.) clobbered a 2-run homer to left field off the scoreboard to put the Ravens ahead 2-1. Shortly after, Michael Quiros (Springfield, Mass.) was hit by a pitch, stole second, then stole third, and finally dashed home on an error to give the Ravens the 3-1 lead.  
  • The Panthers pulled within one in the bottom of the 6th thanks to an RBI single up the middle from Joe Pellegrino, making it 3-2 Ravens.  
  • The Panthers tied the score in the bottom of the 8th inning. James Eden scored on a passed ball, leveling the game at 3 a-piece.  
  • The game couldn't be settled in 9 innings and extra baseball was needed. It took until the top of the 12th inning to get some runs back on the board. Ian Battipaglia (Cheshire, Conn.) ripped a double to left center, scoring Michael Quiros to put the Ravens back in front 4-3. Then, Kiobel Lugo (Boston, Mass.) drew a walk and Nolan DeAndrade (Bridgewater, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Ian Battipaglia to make it 5-3. The Ravens kept the small ball going as Hunter Wilichoski (Hamilton, Mass.) grounded out to second, moving Nolan DeAndrade to second and scoring Kiobel Lugo, extending their lead to 6-3. They padded their lead with Hunter Paquette (North Walpole, N.H.) reaching first by an error from the third baseman, scoring Nolan DeAndrade and giving the Ravens the comfortable 7-3 lead and the victory.  

BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS: 

  • Kyle Salvati (Mount Sinai, NY) started for the Ravens and pitched 5 innings, giving up 6 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 walks, and striking out 5 batters. Esteban Rivera III (Hamden, Conn.) came in relief and pitched 2 and a third innings, giving up 2 hits, 1 run, 3 walks, and striking out a batter. Stephen Bangs (Stoughton, Mass.) was stellar in relief, picking up his 3rd win of the season and closing up shop for the Ravens, allowing ho hits and striking out 2 batters.  
  • The Ravens outhit the Panthers 9-8.  
  • Each team recorded 2 errors.  

GAME 2: 
HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • The Ravens opened the flood gates in the top of the 1st inning. Eli Battipaglia (Cheshire, Conn.) ripped a double to right center field, followed up by another strike from Joey Acker, who smoked an RBI double to left center field, putting the Ravens up 1-0. Ian Battipaglia (Cheshire, Conn.) and Kiobel Lugo (Boston, Mass.) each singled, loading the bases. Hunter Wilichoski (Hamilton, Mass.) walked, which brought in a run and gave the Ravens the 2-0 lead. The Ravens struck again as Ian Battipaglia scored on a passed ball, giving them an early 3-0 lead.  
  • The Panthers got a run back in the bottom of the 1st as Anthony Rigogliosi scored on a throwing error from Christopher Roberti (New Fairfield, Conn.), cutting the deficit to 3-1.  
  • The Ravens offense stayed hot in the top of the 2nd inning. They received some gifts from the Panthers and took advantage. Eli Battipaglia and Joey Acker were each hit by a pitch, then advanced on the base paths because of a wild pitch. Ian Battipaglia lifted a single to center field to score Eli Battipaglia and advance Joey Acker to third, putting the Ravens ahead 4-1. Nolan DeAndrade (Bridgewater, Mass.) added a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Acker and giving the Ravens a comfortable 5-1 lead.  
  • The Panthers wouldn't go away quietly, responding with 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Joe Pellegrino smashed a game-tying 3-run homer to level the game at 5 a piece.  
  • The pendulum swung back in the favor of the Ravens in the top of the 4th inning, as they struck for 3 runs to regain the lead. Ian Battipaglia began the inning with a single up the middle. He then stole second and Hunter Wilichoski (Hamilton, Mass.) walked. They advanced on the base paths on a wild pitch, which would bring home Ian Battipaglia after a sacrifice fly from Nolan DeAndrade, putting the Ravens back in front 6-5. The Ravens loaded up the bases after a walk by Michael Quiros (Springfield, Mass.) and Christopher Roberti getting hit by a pitch. Connor Smalley (West Sayville, N.Y.) took full advantage by smacking a single to center field, scoring 2 runs and giving the Ravens the 8-5 lead.  
  • Nolan DeAndrade added his 3rd RBI of the game with a double to right field to pad the Ravens lead, making it 9-5.  
  • Joe Pellegrino gave the Panthers signs of life with a solo homer to left center, cutting the deficit to 9-6.  
  • The Ravens added an insurance run in the bottom of the 7th, as Ian Battipaglia scored on a passed ball, giving them the 10-6 lead and the sweep in the doubleheader.  

BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS: 

  • Chaz Powell (Stamford, Conn.) got the start for the Ravens, pitching 2 and a third and giving up 5 hits, 4 earned runs, and a homer. Niklas Pavia (Bolton, Mass.) came in relief and picked up his 1st win of the season, going 4 and 2 thirds and allowing 1 hit, 1 earned run, 1 homer, walking 2 batters, and striking out 4.  
  • The Ravens outhit the Panthers 10-6. 
  • The Ravens allowed 2 errors; the Panthers allowed none.
