Volleyball Swept at Adelphi, 3-0

Ravens visit Pace Saturday morning

Swiderski Swiderski led the Ravens with nine kills at Adelphi on Friday.

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (October 28, 2011) – Sophomore right side Natasha Ray (Colorado Springs, Colo.) narrowly missed a double-double with eight kills and 12 digs on Friday night, though the Franklin Pierce University volleyball team was defeated, 3-0, by Adelphi at Center for Recreation and Sport. Junior outside hitter Chelsea Overholt hit .478 with 12 kills in 23 attempts to lead Adelphi.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 11-12 (5-7 Northeast-10), while Adelphi improves to 15-7 (8-3 Northeast-10). The Panthers swept to the three-set win by scores of 25-10, 25-20 and 25-21.

For the Ravens, freshman outside hitter Catie Swiderski (Rocky Point, N.Y.) led the team with nine kills, while sophomore middle Katie Jackson (Centennial, Colo.) hit a team-high .400 over 15 attempts to finish with seven kills. Ray hit .350 on the evening with one error against her eight kills in 20 attempts. The offense worked through sophomore setter Stephanie Svorinic (Scottsdale, Ariz.), who dished out 23 assists.

Defensively behind Ray, no other Raven tallied more than six digs, as Adelphi put down 41 kills in just 96 attempts to hit .333 as a team. At the net, four different Ravens notched one block assist each.

For Adelphi, Overholt was joined in double digits by freshman middle Kaitlyn DeStefano, who hit a match-best .643 (minimum 10 attempts) with 10 kills and one error over 14 swings. Senior middle Patawe Simms chipped in seven kills as well, as the trio worked off the set of sophomore Katie Bryson, who finished with a match-best 28 assists. Senior defensive specialist Bianca Hernandez served up a match-high five aces.

Defensively, the Panthers scattered 40 digs, with no player reaching double digits. Junior libero Bree Popham led the way with nine digs, while Hernandez picked up eight more. DeStefano controlled the match up front with seven block assists, and junior right side Samantha Breidenbach contributed four blocks (one solo).

The Ravens return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 29, when they travel to Pace for a Northeast-10 Conference match. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Goldstein Fitness Center in Pleasantville, N.Y. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Saturday, Nov. 5 against Assumption at 1 p.m.
