Volleyball Holds Senior Festivities, Honors Four Players; Ravens Fall Twice on Afternoon

Kohout Kohout finished her career with 1,905 digs, by far the most by any player in Ravens history.

RINDGE, N.H. (November 6, 2010) – On a day about more than what happens on the court, the Franklin Pierce University volleyball team honored four seniors on Saturday evening, including the school's all-time digs leader, a member of the 1,000-assist club and a member of the 1,000-kill club. Between the lines on the day, Franklin Pierce was defeated, 3-0, by both Pace and the New York Institute of Technology.

With the losses, Franklin Pierce wraps up its season at 10-14 (4-11 Northeast-10). In the match against Pace, the Ravens were defeated by set scores of 25-21, 25-11 and 25-14. Against NYIT, Franklin Pierce fell, 25-17, 25-20 and 25-23.

Prior to the match against NYIT, the Ravens honored their four senior student-athletes. Senior libero Chelsie Kohout (Harrison Township, Mich.) closed out her career as the school's all-time leader in digs, added 37 more between the two matches and finished with 1,905 for her career. Senior setter Pamela Walker (Chino Hills, Calif.) surpassed 1,000 assists for her career this season after transferring into the University prior to the 2009 campaign. Senior outside hitter Christina Calderon (Tombstone, Ariz.) returned for her senior season after a five-year hiatus and became only the fifth player in school history to total 1,000 career kills. Graduate student outside hitter Kelsey Painter (Glendale, Ariz.) finished third on the team in digs in her only season with the Ravens after transferring to Franklin Pierce over the summer.

Against Pace, Painter and Calderon each finished with five kills, while Walker dished out 15 assists and freshman outside hitter Lauren Miller (Alexandria, Ind.) tied for the match lead with two aces. Defensively, Kohout led the Ravens with 18 digs, while freshman middle Katie Jackson (Cherry Creek, Colo.) contributed a pair of block assists.

For Pace, sophomore outside hitter Nora Rugova hit .312 with a match-best 13 kills, while fellow sophomore outside hitter Susana Verdugo-Del Real tallied 11 kills and led all players by hitting .333. The duo and the rest of the Pace offense ran through the set of junior Shea Hansen, who dished out 32 assists. Defensively, sophomore libero Elyse Rowland led four players in double digits with 23 digs, while senior middle Sianna Johnson added three blocks (two solo).

Walker Walker collected over 1,000 assists in her two seasons with the Ravens.

Against NYIT, freshman middle Ashley Bruce (Hampton Falls, N.H.) led the way for the Ravens by hitting a match-best .400 to tally nine kills. Miller added seven kills of her own, and Calderon chipped in six more, while Walker handed out 24 assists and dealt out a pair of aces.

On the defensive side of the net, Kohout finished with 19 digs and Miller picked up 10 to finish just three kills shy of a double-double. Miller finished the season with a team-best seven double-doubles.

For NYIT, freshman outside hitter Shelby Cable hit .370 and rang up a match-high 13 kills and junior outside hitter Tugce Sirdas added 11 of her own while hitting .286 as the Bears hit .277 over the course of the match. Junior setter Damla Albayrak handed out a match-high 33 assists.

Defensively, Cable completed her double-double with 14 digs and led three Bears in double figures. Both Cable and junior middle Kubra Kuzu finished with a pair of block assists.
