Freshmen, Team Defense Lead Volleyball Over Saint Rose, 3-1

Jackson collects 12 kills, Ravens record eight blocks

Jackson Jackson had 12 kills and three block assists in the win at Saint Rose on Saturday afternoon.

ALBANY, N.Y. (October 30, 2010) – Freshman middle Katie Jackson (Cherry Creek, Colo.) led the way with 12 kills and freshman outside hitter Lauren Miller (Alexandria, Ind.) added 11 of her own on Saturday afternoon to lead the Franklin Pierce University volleyball team to a 3-1 road victory over Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference play at Nolan Gymnasium. Junior outside hitter Sarah Kahrs led all players with 13 kills and added 13 digs to post a double-double in the loss for Saint Rose.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 10-9 (4-8 Northeast-10), while Saint Rose falls to 6-19 (3-10 Northeast-10). Franklin Pierce took the first set, 25-21, before Saint Rose answered with a 25-17 win in the second set. The Ravens closed out the match with 25-22 wins in both the third and fourth sets.

For Franklin Pierce, Jackson and Miller were the only players to collect more than five kills on the afternoon, as the offense finished with just a .007 hitting percentage with 34 kills against 33 errors on the afternoon. The Ravens .108 in the fourth set was the highest single-set percentage by either team on the afternoon as neither offense could really find its rhythm. For its part, Saint Rose hit .020, with 37 kills and 34 errors.

As always, senior setter Pam Walker (Chino Hills, Calif.) ran the offense for Franklin Pierce, as she dished out 29 assists, while serving up three aces as well. Defensively, senior libero Chelsie Kohout (Harrison Township, Mich.) led all players with 25 digs, while graduate student outside hitter Kelsey Painter (Glendale, Ariz.) added 13 more as the Ravens collected 71 digs as a team. Miller, Jackson and freshman middle Ashley Bruce (Hampton Falls, N.H.) each collected three block assists on the afternoon as part of Franklin Pierce's eight team blocks.

For Saint Rose, Kahrs was the only player in double digits offensively, though senior middle Kelly Ryan finished with nine kills and sophomore right side Jordan Bakowski added seven more. Junior setter Chelsea Tyler handed out a match-best 30 assists for the Golden Knights.

On the defensive side of the net, both sophomore defensive specialist Laura Falkowitz (18 digs) and Kahrs (13) finished in double figures. Freshman middle Alex Gagliano was effective at the net to the tune of eight blocks (one solo).

The Ravens return to the court on Sunday, Oct. 31, when they travel to Le Moyne for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. The match is scheduled for noon at Ted Grant Court in Syracuse, N.Y. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Tuesday, Nov. 2 against Merrimack at 7 p.m.
