Volleyball Hosts Dig Pink Event, Falls to American International, 3-1

Miller posts double-double, Bruce hits .222

Dig Pink The Ravens and the Yellow Jackets participated in the Side Out Foundation's Dig Pink initiative on Wednesday night. Franklin Pierce's final donation total was $789.

Miller Miller finished with 12 kills and 15 digs on Wednesday night against AIC to post her seventh double-double of the season.

RINDGE, N.H. (October 27, 2010) – Freshman outside hitter Lauren Miller (Alexandria, Ind.) picked up her seventh double-double of the season with 12 kills and 15 digs on Wednesday night, but the Franklin Pierce University volleyball team was defeated, 3-1, by American International in Northeast-10 Conference play at the Fieldhouse. Junior outside hitter Ellisha Terry racked up a double-double of her own with 20 kills and 17 digs for AIC.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 9-9 (3-8 Northeast-10), while American International improves to 17-11 (8-4 Northeast-10). After AIC took the first set, 25-16, Franklin Pierce answered with a 25-20 victory in the second set. However, the Yellow Jackets would take the third and fourth sets by identical, 25-19 scores to wrap up the match.

Both teams participated in the Side Out Foundation's Dig Pink initiative in conjunction with the match. The two clubs raised money to benefit breast cancer research and promote breast cancer awareness through donations and by taking pledges of money to be donated per dig. With 80 digs as a team on the evening, the Ravens pushed their donation total for the event to $789.

Terry would collect five digs in each of the four sets to post her total of 20, and she led the Yellow Jackets with seven digs in their nine-point victory in the first set. For the Ravens, Miller answered with seven kills, no errors and a .467 hitting percentage in the second set to help even the match at one set apiece. Senior setter Pam Walker (Chino Hills, Calif.) dished out 14 of her 34 assists in the second set, while senior libero Chelsie Kohout (Harrison Township, Mich.) collected 10 digs. As a team, the Ravens hit .324 with 15 kills and just three errors in the second set, the best hitting percentage in a single set by either team on the evening.

Senior outside hitter Kambryn Williams picked up five kills in the third set and added four more in the fourth to go with the five kills in each set from Terry as the Yellow Jackets closed out the match.

For Franklin Pierce, Miller was the only player to finish in double digits offensively, though senior outside hitter Christina Calderon (Tombstone, Ariz.) and freshman middle Ashley Bruce (Hampton Falls, N.H.) added eight kills each. Defensively, Kohout led the way with 26 digs. She was joined in double digits by Miller and graduate student outside hitter Kelsey Painter (Glendale, Ariz.), who picked up 11 digs.

For AIC, Terry racked up the most kills, though junior middle Taila de Souza was the most efficient, as she piled up 13 kills against just two errors to hit a match-best .478. Williams added 10 kills to make it three Yellow Jackets in double figures while junior setter Kervelle Redhead dished out 44 assists as she ran the offense.

Defensively, four AIC players finished in double digits: freshman outside hitter Caitlin Connelly (23 digs), Terry, Redhead (14) and freshman outside hitter Siri Ngundam (11). Ngundam led all players with three blocks (one solo) on the evening.

The Ravens return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 30, when they travel to Saint Rose for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Albany, N.Y. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Tuesday, Nov. 2 against Merrimack at 7 p.m.
