Miller, Jackson Lead Volleyball to 3-1 Win at Saint Anselm

Ravens collect 100 digs as a team

MANCHESTER, N.H. (October 6, 2010) – Freshman outside hitter Lauren Miller (Alexandria, Ind.) posted her fifth double-double of the season and her third in four matches as she piled up 22 digs to go with 13 kills, while freshman middle Katie Jackson (Cherry Creek, Colo.) added 10 kills of her own and hit a match-best .286 on Wednesday night to lead the Franklin Pierce University volleyball team to a 3-1 road victory over Saint Anselm in Northeast-10 Conference play at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium. Freshman middle Kylie Kozlowski led the way for Saint Anselm with 10 kills.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 8-5 (2-4 Northeast-10), while Saint Anselm fell to 1-10 (0-6 Northeast-10). The Ravens dropped the first set, 25-18 before rallying for the victory with wins of 25-22, 25-8 and 25-22.

Miller and Jackson were two of three Ravens in double digits offensively, as senior outside hitter Christina Calderon (Tombstone, Ariz.) finished with 10 kills of her own. The trio worked off the set of senior Pam Walker (Chino Hills, Calif.), who dished out 40 assists and served up two aces. Jackson picked up four of her 10 kills in the final set, as she hit .571 in the fourth set to help put away the match.

The Franklin Pierce defense led the way most of the evening. Senior libero Chelsie Kohout (Harrison Township, Mich.) finished with 24 digs and is now just 11 digs shy of tying Tara Vece for the program's all-time record. She was joined in double digits by Miller, graduate student outside hitter Kelsey Painter (Glendale, Ariz.) and Walker, as the trio collected 22, 19 and 13 digs, respectively. For Walker, the 13 digs gave her the seventh double-double of her career, and her first of the season.

As a team, the Ravens finished with 100 digs on the night to hold Saint Anselm to an .070 attack percentage in the match. Meanwhile, the Ravens hit just .053 while losing the first set, but posted .200, .207 and .262 marks in the next three sets. It was the first 100-dig match for the Ravens since Nov. 1 of last season against Le Moyne, though that was a five-set contest. The last time Franklin Pierce collected 100 digs in a four-set match was on Sept. 22, 2007 against New York Institute of Technology.

For Saint Anselm, Kozlowski was the only player in double digits offensively and led the team by hitting .216. Sophomore middle Samantha Elliott added eight kills, while freshman middle Kyla Gustavson chipped in seven more. Junior setter Rachel Flaherty ran the offense for the Hawks and finished with 29 assists.

On the defensive side of the ball, sophomore libero Margaret Tereschuk led all players with 32 digs, while Gustavson added 19 more.

The Ravens return to the court on Wednesday, Oct. 13, when they return home to host Massachusetts Lowell in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Fieldhouse in Rindge, N.H.
