Volleyball Downed At Southern Connecticut State, 3-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (October
3, 2009) – Senior Jenna Tammel tallied six kills and
10 digs on Saturday night and lead Southern Connecticut State to a
3-0 victory over the Franklin Pierce University volleyball team in
Northeast-10 Conference play at Pelz Gymnasium. Senior
Erika Takegawa (Kitakyushu, Japan) totaled nine
digs for Franklin Pierce in defeat.
Southern Connecticut State swept through the match by scores of
25-19, 25-15 and 25-14. With the win, SCSU improves to 15-3 (4-3
Northeast-10), while Franklin Pierce falls to 4-13 (1-4
Northeast-10) with the loss.
For Franklin Pierce, senior Katie Ristow (Miami,
Fla.) led the team with six kills, while sophomore
Dana Rowinski (Dix Hills, N.Y.) added five of her
own and junior Pamela Walker (Chino Hills, Calif.)
dished out 16 assists. Behind Takegawa, Ristow led the defensive
effort with seven digs, while senior Megan Feldmeth (South
Pasadena, Calif.) led the team with two block assists.
For Southern Connecticut State, Tammel and senior Marcia
Hollingsworth led the way with six kills apiece, while three other
Owls collected five kills each. Hollingsworth piled up a match-best
.667 hitting percentage, as she did not commit an attacking error
over nine attempts. The offense ran through the set of freshman
Kimberly Lachowicz, who handed out a match-best 21 assists.
Defensively for SCSU, Tammel tallied 10 digs while Hollingsworth
led all players with three blocks (two solo).
As a team, the Owls hit .244 over 82 attacks (33 kills, 13
errors), including a .318 second set in which they tallied 11 kills
to just four errors over 22 attacks. In that second set, five
different SCSU players tallied two kills each. Franklin Pierce hit
.038 for the match (21 kills, 18 errors, 79 attacks).
After a closer first set, Southern Connecticut State used large
runs in the middle of the second and third sets to put the match
away. Tied 9-9 in the second set, the Owls ran off eight
consecutive points behind the serve of junior Broghan Miller to
take a 17-9 win en route to the 25-15 win. Then, already holding a
16-12 lead, Tammel put the match on ice with three aces and seven
consecutive points to pus the lead to 23-12 on the way to a 25-14
victory.
The Ravens return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 2, when they
travel to Southern Connecticut State for a Northeast-10 Conference
contest. The match is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Pelz Gymnasium in New
Haven, Conn. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Oct. 7 against
Saint Anselm at 7 p.m.
