Volleyball Falls To New Haven, 3-0

RINDGE, N.H. (October 2, 2009) – Junior Sara Malmlov tallied 15 kills and 15 digs to post a double-double on Friday night and lead New Haven to a 3-0 victory over the Franklin Pierce University volleyball team in Northeast-10 Conference play at Franklin Pierce’s Fieldhouse. Junior libero Chelsie Kohout (Harrison Township, Mich.) collected 15 digs for Franklin Pierce in defeat.

New Haven swept through the match by scores of 25-14, 25-15 and 25-11. With the win, New Haven improves to 11-3 (4-0 Northeast-10), while Franklin Pierce falls to 4-12 (1-3 Northeast-10) with the loss.

For Franklin Pierce, Kohout’s 15 digs tied for the match high, while senior Erika Takegawa (Kitakyushu, Japan) joined her in double digits with 10 digs of her own. Senior Caitlynn Parnell (Medina, Texas) recorded a match-best two blocks (one solo). On the offensive side of the net, a trio of Ravens collected four kills each, while junior setter Pamela Walker (Chino Hills, Calif.) dished out 13 assists.

For New Haven, Malmlov’s double-double led the way, while she was joined in double digits offensively by freshman Keidy Candelaria, who tallied 10 kills of her own. Malmlov’s .433 hitting percentage over 30 attacks (two errors) led all players. The duo and the rest of the Charger offense worked off the set of sophomore Chelsey Alpough, who handed out a match-best 34 assists. Defensively, Malmlov was joined in double figures by sophomore libero Heather Ladao (14 digs) and freshman Tia Inong (10).

As a team, the Chargers hit .312 over 112 attacks (45 kills, 10 errors), including a .364 second set in which they tallied 13 kills to just one error over 33 attacks. In that second set, Malmlov collected five kills without an error over nine attacks to hit .556.

Leading 17-13 in the second set, New Haven rattled off 16 of the next 20 points to take the second set, 25-15, open an 8-2 lead in the third set and effectively put the match away.

The Ravens return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 2, when they travel to Southern Connecticut State for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. The match is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Pelz Gymnasium in New Haven, Conn. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Oct. 7 against Saint Anselm at 7 p.m.
