Volleyball Nipped At Saint Michaels, 3-2
Parnell tallies double-double

COLCHESTER, Vt. (September
22, 2009) – Junior Lindsey Frazier hammered out a
match-best 17 kills on Tuesday night to lead Saint Michael’s
to a 3-2 victory over the Franklin Pierce University volleyball
team in Northeast-10 Conference play at Ross Sports Center. Senior
Caitlynn Parnell (Medina, Texas) tallied a
double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs for Franklin Pierce in
defeat.
Saint Michael’s took the first set, 25-16, before Franklin
Pierce answered with a 25-19 win to even the match at 1-1. The
Purple Knights took a 2-1 advantage with a 25-21 win in the third
set and again the Ravens had the answer, this time with a 25-20
victory in the fourth set, before Saint Michael’s put the
match away, 15-11, in the decisive fifth set.
With the win, Saint Michael’s improves to 5-5 (1-2
Northeast-10), while Franklin Pierce falls to 3-8 (0-1
Northeast-10) with the loss.
For Franklin Pierce, senior Katie Ristow (Miami,
Fla.) led the way with a team season-high 20 kills and
chalked up a team-leading .300 hitting percentage over 50 attacks
(five errors). She was joined in double digits by Parnell and
sophomore Dana Rowinski (Dix Hills, N.Y.), who
tallied 11 kills each. Junior Pamela Walker (Chino Hills,
Calif.) dished out 37 assists for the Ravens. Defensively,
Parnell added 13 digs to complete the double-double, while junior
libero Chelsie Kohout (Harrison Township, Mich.) led the team and
tied for the match lead with 16 digs. Senior Megan Feldmeth
(South Pasadena, Calif.) contributed seven block assists
while Ristow added eight digs, four block assists and three service
aces to fill out her stat line.
For Saint Michael’s, freshmen Samantha Clairemont (12 kills)
and Tracy Peterka (11) each joined Frazier in double digits,
working off the set of fellow freshman Maggie Zuhlke, who handed
out a match-best 46 assists. Defensively for the Purple Knights,
senior Kelly Garthwait (16 digs) and freshman Lilly Lowe (14) each
tallied double figures, while Clairemont led the way with five
blocks (two solo).
Franklin Pierce tallied 55 kills against 32 errors over 148 attacks
to hit .155 on the evening. The offense looked its best in its
second-set victory, when the Ravens chalked up 11 kills against two
errors in 26 swings to tally a .346 percentage.
Meanwhile, Saint Michael’s hit just .146 on the night, with
55 kills and 31 errors over 164 attacks. However, the Purple
Knights came out of the gates strong with a .458 percentage in the
first set (12 kills, one error, 24 attempts) and closed with a .286
percentage in the fifth set (11 kills, three errors, 28
attempts).
The Ravens return to the court on Friday, Sept. 25, when they
travel to Merrimack for a non-conference contest. Match time is set
for 7 p.m. at Volpe Center in North Andover, Mass. Franklin Pierce
next plays at home on Sept. 29 against Southern New Hampshire at 7
p.m.
