Volleyball Splits Pair Of Matches At Northeast-10/East Coast Conference Challenge

Dana Rowinski Dana Rowinski recorded 11 kills in the win over Queens on Saturday afternoon.

WALTHAM, Mass. (September 19, 2009) – Senior Katie Ristow (Miami, Fla.) and sophomore Dana Rowinski (Dix Hills, N.Y.) each chalked up 11 kills on Saturday afternoon to lead the Franklin Pierce University volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Queens in non-conference play at the Northeast-10/East Coast Conference Challenge, hosted by Bentley at Dana Center. Earlier in the afternoon, junior Terry Masava collected 13 kills to lead Bridgeport to a 3-0 victory over Franklin Pierce.

Against Bridgeport, Franklin Pierce was swept away by scores of 25-23, 25-17 and 25-14. In the second match of the day, the Ravens took the first set, 25-19, before Queens bounced back with a 25-21 victory in the second set. From there, Franklin Pierce put the hammer down and posted 25-12 and 25-14 victories to close out the match. With the split, Franklin Pierce is now 3-7 (0-0 Northeast-10).

With eight kills in each of the two matches Saturday and nine Friday night against New York Institute of Technology, senior Caitlynn Parnell (Medina, Texas) finished the Northeast-10/East Coast Conference Challenge with 25 kills (2.27 per set) to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

Against Bridgeport, Parnell led the way with eight kills and a .240 hitting percentage (two errors, 25 attacks), while junior setter Pamela Walker (Chino Hills, Calif.) dished out 23 assists. On the defensive side of the net, Ristow recorded a match-high 13 digs.

For the Purple Knights, Masava was joined in double digits by graduate student Agatha Baliddawa (11 kills), who posted a match-best .556 hitting percentage with just one error over 18 swings. The duo worked off the set of junior Yael Cohen, who handed out a match-best 24 assists. Defensively, Baliddawa led the way with four blocks (three solo).

The Ravens kept Bridgeport close in the first set, thanks in part to six attacking errors and a .105 hitting percentage from the Purple Knights. Bridgeport got the offense churning later and hit .294 and .281 in the second and third sets, respectively, to finish off the match.

Against Queens, Ristow and Rowinski led the way and were joined in double digits by senior Megan Feldmeth (South Pasadena, Calif.) who posted 10 kills to just two errors over 18 attacks to hit .444 in the match. Walker dished out a match-best 33 assists and also added five kills, five digs and a block assist to fill out her stat line. Junior libero Chelsie Kohout (Harrison Township, Mich.) led the Ravens defensively with 18 digs, while Parnell and Feldmeth each chalked up three blocks.

For Queens, sophomore Latoya Edward (16 kills, 12 digs) and junior Camila Dantas (11 kills, 19 digs) each posted double-doubles. Meanwhile, sophomore Linda Tatala-Colin recorded seven kills to just one error over 13 attacks to lead all players with .462 hitting percentage. Freshman setter Maria Loor handed out 25 assists.

The Ravens return to the court on Tuesday, Sept. 22, when they travel to Saint Michael’s for their Northeast-10 Conference opener. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at Ross Sports Center in Colchester, Vt. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Sept. 29 against Southern New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
