Volleyball Splits Tri-Match; Defeats Concordia, Falls To Merrimack

Megan Feldmeth Megan Feldmeth hammered out a season-best 14 kills as the Ravens swept Concordia on Saturday afternoon.

RINDGE, N.H. (September 12, 2009) – Senior Megan Feldmeth (South Pasadena, Calif.) racked up 14 kills and a .667 hitting percentage on Saturday afternoon to lead the Franklin Pierce University volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep over Concordia in non-conference play at Franklin Pierce’s Fieldhouse. Later in the day, juniors Molly Cindric and Megan Murray each tallied 10 kills to lead Merrimack to a 3-0, non-conference sweep of Franklin Pierce.

The Ravens defeated Concordia by set scores of 25-18, 25-14 and 25-7 and were done in by Merrimack by scores of 25-17, 25-9 and 25-19. In the middle match of the day, Merrimack swept past Concordia, 25-9, 25-8 and 25-14.

With the split, Franklin Pierce is now 2-5 (0-0 Northeast-10), while Merrimack improves to 6-2 (0-0 Northeast-10) with the pair of victories. With the losses, Concordia falls to 0-6 (0-0 Central Atlantic).

Against Concordia, Feldmeth posted a season-best and match-high 14 kills to lead the offense, as she worked off the set of junior Pamela Walker (Chino Hills, Calif.), who dished out a match-best 26 assists. On the other side of the net, junior libero Chelsie Kohout (Harrison Township, Mich.) led the defense and tied for the match lead with eight digs, while Feldmeth recorded a pair of block assists. Senior Katie Ristow (Miami, Fla.) served up five aces, including a pair in the third set.

For the Clippers, freshman Courtney Hanson (five kills) and sophomore Amanda Margedant (eight assists) led the offensive effort while Margedant added eight digs to match Kohout defensively. Hanson and sophomore Alicia Oberle each recorded a pair of block assists in the losing effort for Concordia.

Franklin Pierce hit .333 for the match with 38 kills and 13 errors over 75 attempts. Concordia posted a -.053 hitting percentage as they recorded 12 kills and made 15 errors over 57 attacks. The Ravens controlled play throughout much of the match and put the contest on ice by running off the first 12 points of the third set, including a run of 11 consecutive points on the serve of Ristow.

Against Merrimack, Walker led the way for Franklin Pierce with her second double-double of the season, as she handed out 17 assists and racked up a match-best 20 digs. Defensively, Kohout joined Walker in double figures with 13 digs while Walker also led the Ravens with a pair of blocks (one solo). Offensively, senior Caitlynn Parnell (Medina, Texas) led the way with eight kills, while Ristow served up three more aces.

For the Warriors, Cindric and Murray paced the offense with 10 kills each, working off the set of junior Elyse Lorenz, who guided the offense with 28 assists. On the defensive side of the year, junior libero Alyssa Pickert (15 digs) and freshman Natalee Yeazle (13) each posted double-digit efforts, while Murray and Yeazle each tallied three block assists.

The offense disappeared for Franklin Pierce against Merrimack, as the Ravens piled up 24 errors against 23 kills in 105 swings to record a -.010 hitting percentage. Meanwhile, Merrimack fired off 39 kills to 10 errors in 114 attacks to hit .254.

After the Ravens put up a fight in the first set before losing the final five points to fall 25-17, Merrimack took control of the match by hammering out 16 kills to just one error to hit .536 en route to taking the second set, 25-9. Holding a 5-2 lead early in the set, the Warriors ran off six consecutive points on the serve of junior Heidi Wroblicky and never looked back.

The Ravens return to the court on Friday, Sept. 18, when they host New York Institute of Technology in the Northeast-10/East Coast Conference Challenge. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Fieldhouse.
