Volleyball Opens Season At C.W. Post Invitational

Emily Schultz and the Ravens opened their season this weekend with four non-conference matches at the C.W. Post Invitational.

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (August 30, 2008) – The Franklin Pierce University volleyball team opened up its season this week with one win in four matches at the C.W. Post Invitational. The Ravens defeated New York Institute of Technology, 3-1, on Friday to open the tournament before dropping a match to Regis (3-0) later in the day and falling to host C.W. Post (3-0) and Dallas Baptist (3-2) on Saturday.

Franklin Pierce opened the tournament on Friday afternoon and dropped its first set, 25-22, to NYIT. However, the Ravens came back with wins of 25-22, 25-15 and 25-19 to win their season-opening match. Senior Emily Schultz (Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) led the way for Franklin Pierce with 15 kills while senior Nicole Buchholz (Broadlands, Va./Stone Bridge) collected 10 kills, four digs, two blocks and a pair of aces. Junior Caitlynn Parnell (Medina, Texas/Medina) narrowly missed a double-double with 13 kills and nine digs.

Later that night, the Ravens were swept by Regis by scores of 25-12, 25-12 and 25-15. Junior Megan Feldmeth (South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena) led the Franklin Pierce offense with five kills and sophomore Chelsie Kohout (Harrison Township, Mich./L’Anse Creuse) paced the defense with 13 digs, which tied for the match lead.

Today, Franklin Pierce dropped a three-set decision to host C.W. Post, 25-22, 25-19, 25-23. Buchholz led the offense with nine kills. Senior Karissa Hookstadt (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo) anchored the defense with eight digs and also chipped in five kills of her own.

Later Saturday, the Ravens dropped a close, five-set match to Dallas Baptist in their final contest of the tournament. Franklin Pierce took the first two sets, 26-24 and 25-22, but then Dallas Baptist rallied to take the final three sets, 25-17, 25-17 and 15-9. Buchholz again paced the offense with 12 kills while Schultz tallied eight digs and three blocks.

Franklin Pierce (1-3, 0-0 NE-10) is off until Tuesday, Sept. 9 when it hosts Assumption in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both squads. Match time is set for 7 p.m., at the Fieldhouse.
