Emily Schultz Emily Schultz tallied a match-high 13 kills on Saturday against Saint Anselm.

RINDGE, N.H. (September 23, 2006) – Franklin Pierce earned a split decision in a volleyball tri-match this afternoon at the Fieldhouse. The Ravens opened with a 3-0 (30-17, 30-19, 30-22) victory over Saint Anselm in a Northeast-10 Conference match before suffering a tough 3-0 (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) non-conference setback to the University of New Haven in the nightcap.

Franklin Pierce cruised to a Northeast-10 Conference victory over Saint Anselm College in today’s opening match.

Sophomore Emily Schultz (Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) led the Ravens with a match-high 13 kills (season-best .407 hitting percentage) to go with three service aces (all in game one) and seven digs. Classmate Karissa Hookstadt (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo) paced the attack with 33 assists to go with six kills and eight digs. Freshman Caitlynn Parnell (Medina, Texas/Medina) contributed eight kills, a team-high 11 digs and four blocks (three solo). Classmate Kelly Mahoney (Wakefield, R.I./South Kingstown) chipped in a season-high seven kills.

Saint Anselm was led by senior Kathleen McCarthy (Quincy, Mass./Quincy) with six kills, 13 assists and 11 digs. Junior Alana McNeil (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic) added seven kills and a block.

In game two, Franklin Pierce suffered a tough 3-0 non-conference setback in today’s final match.

The University of New Haven was led by the hitting duo of sophomore Helena Castro (Minas Gerais, Brazil/George Mason) and junior Rhe-Ann Niles (St. Thomas, Barbados/Barbados CC). The pair combined for 22 kills and five blocks in the three game match. Freshman setter Carolina Ribeiro (Minas Gerais, Brazil/Colegio Promove) registered 34 assists to pace the Charger offense, while classmate Alessandra Valentino (Branford, Conn./Branford) posted a match-high 13 digs to lead the defense.

Franklin Pierce sophomore Nicole Buchholz (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) and freshman Caitlynn Parnell (Medina, Texas/Medina) led the Ravens attack posting nine kills apiece. Sophomore Emily Schultz (Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) was also solid, totaling six kills and ten digs, while senior libero Michelle McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington) chipped in ten digs defensively.

Franklin Pierce (6-3, 3-1 NE-10) is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Assumption College for an NE-10 match at 7 p.m. Saint Anselm (1-10, 0-5 NE-10) visits Saint Michael’s College Tuesday at 7 p.m. New Haven (11-5, 3-0 NE-10) travels to the University of Bridgeport on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
