Women’s Track & Field Takes First Place at ECSU

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. (April 15, 2021) -- The Franklin Pierce University women's track & field team had a busy day of success at the Eastern Connecticut State Invitational #2 on Thursday. The Ravens took first place at the meet, with 175 points, which beat out host Eastern Connecticut State, at 107 points, and New Haven, at 61. Combined with the men's team's win on Thursday, Franklin Pierce track & field has now recorded 25 meet victories all-time in program history.

In the 100-meter dash, sophomore Destini Hill-Edwards (Paget, Bermuda) took first spot for her 13.35-second performance. Sophomores Julieth Nwosu (Brockton, Mass.) and Stephanie Manu (Boston, Mass.) followed her with times of 13.75 seconds and 14.26 seconds, respectively. Sophomore Nyjah Young-Bey (Montclair, N.J.) took top spot in the 200-meter dash for her 26.77-second time. Hill-Edwards claimed second for a 28.33-second time and freshman Angelique Coa took third for a 29.59-second run. Young-Bey took the top spot again, but this time for the 400, with a time of 1:01.70. Junior Alana Thompson (Westampton, N.J.) took second after a 1:06.52 time, and junior Alena Masterson (Pelham, N.H.) took third for her 1:07.88 performance.

In the 800, graduate student Bethaney Donnelly (Manchester, United Kingdom) took first spot for her 2:27.99 time. Donnelly also clinched first in the 1500, for her 5:05.66 time, and first in the 5k, after a time of 18:58.12. In the 800, freshman Meghan Sheline (Southington, Conn.) finished with a 2:36.94 time to take third place. Graduate student Julia Cormier (Northwood, N.H.) took third in the 5k for her 20:22.80 time.

Sophomore Victoria Van Houten (Wantage, N.J.) took first in the steeplechase with her time of 14:01.44. Freshman Fadima Kaba (Peabody, Mass.) ran the 100-meter hurdles in 17.14 seconds to take first. Franklin Pierce's 4x100m relay placed second after a 51.50-second finish. In the 4x400, the Ravens took third for their 4:28.96 time.

Junior Paola Brena (Queretaro, Mexico) cleared 1.55 meters in the high jump to take first place. She also took top spot in the triple jump for her 10.23-meter mark. Meanwhile, junior Stephanie Phoenix (Wallingford, Conn.) cleared 2.74 meters to win the pole vault.

The Nwosu sisters claimed top performances in the shot put and discus. Julieth Nwosu took first in both events for her 12.55-meter throw in the shot put, and 40.10-meter throw in the discus, the latter of which represented a new school record. Freshman Nkechi Nwosu (Brockton, Mass.) posted a 38.79-meter throw in the discus and an 11.42-meter throw in the shot put to claim second in both events. The sisters were followed by junior Samantha DeSouza (Sebago, Maine), who took third in both events. She threw 11.08 meters in the shotput and 34.77 meters in the discus. Junior Julia Groll (Southington, Conn.) threw the hammer 40.04 meters and placed first. In third for the javelin was junior Jessica Brewster (Castleton, Vt.), with a throw of 26.95 meters.

The Ravens are scheduled to be back in action on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 20-21, when they host the Teamsgiving Relays-South, at Murdock High School in Winchendon, Mass.
