Track & Field has Three Selected to NCAA Championships
INDIANAPOLIS (May 14, 2019) – The Franklin Pierce University track & field program will be represented by three student-athletes at the NCAA Championships, as announced Tuesday afternoon by the NCAA. For the women, senior CeCe Telfer (Lebanon, N.H.) and freshman Paola Brena (Queretaro, Mexico) will travel to the national meet, while sophomore Hugo Arlabosse (Marseille, France) has qualified on the men’s side.
The NCAA Championships will be hosted by Texas A&M University-Kingsville on Thursday through Saturday, May 23-25, at Javelina Stadium in Kingsville, Texas. The selection process begins with the top 20 competitors in each individual event. Student-athletes are then added or removed, based on strength of the field, to reach a meet size of 377 participants per gender, with a maximum of 24 competitors allowed in any individual event.
For Franklin Pierce, the outdoor selections feature the same three student-athletes who were selected to compete at the indoor NCAA Championships in March. It is the 10th time in program history the Ravens have sent multiple student-athletes to a national championship meet. Further, since 2014, Franklin Pierce has sent 37 athletes to NCAA Championship competition.
Telfer has qualified in a pair of events, as she will compete in the 100-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles. The preliminary heats of the 400-meter hurdles are set for 9:25 p.m. (all times EDT) on Thursday, followed by the final at 8:20 p.m. Saturday. Meanwhile, the 100-meter hurdles has preliminary heats scheduled for 7:40 p.m. Friday, and the final is slated for 6:55 p.m. Saturday.
Telfer’s fastest time of the year in the 100-meter hurdles is 13.35 seconds, which was set at the NEICAAA Championships last week. Her fastest time in the 400-meter hurdles is 57.79 seconds, which came in late March, at the Florida Relays. She is ranked second in the country in both events.
For her part, Brena has qualified in the high jump, which will be contested on Friday at 6:05 p.m. Brena’s best mark of the season in the event is 1.74 meters, which she cleared at Princeton’s Larry Ellis Invitational in April. She is tied for seventh in the nation in the event.
On the men’s side of things, Arlabosse qualified in the 800 meters. The event will hold its preliminary heats at 7:20 p.m. Friday, followed by the final at 8:05 p.m. Saturday. Arlabosse’s fastest time of the season came this past weekend at the NEICAAA Championships, when he turned in a time of 1:50.10. He is ranked ninth in the nation in the event.
In all events which feature preliminary heats, the final will ultimately consist of eight qualifiers.
