Telfer Wins Thrice as Women’s Track & Field Places Second at Bates Invitational

LEWISTON, Maine (January 19, 2018) – Senior CeCe Telfer (Lebanon, N.H.) tripled up on Saturday, as she posted wins in the 200-meter dash, the 400 meters and the long jump, to lead the Franklin Pierce University women's track & field team to a second-place finish (out of five teams) at the Bates Invitational.

The Ravens earned 110 points on the day, which put them second, behind only host Bates (224.33 points). Following the Ravens in third place was Keene State (82.33 points).

Telfer's busy day included a pair of school records as well. She ran a time of 24.84 seconds to win the 200-meter dash and added a mark of 56.50 seconds to win the 400 meters, establishing new Franklin Pierce records in both events. Telfer rounded out her trio of wins with a distance of 5.27 meters in the long jump. The times in the two running events both rank among the top 10 marks in the country on the season.

Telfer had company in the long jump, as senior Lilian Baah (Danielson, Conn.) took second place, with a distance of 5.02 meters. It was all part of a day which saw the Ravens collect nine top-five finishes in field events, as well as eight more in track events, for a total of 17 top-five finishes.

Elsewhere in field events, the Ravens also had two of the top-five finishers in the high jump, the shot put and the weight throw. In the high jump, freshman Paola Brena (Queretaro, Mexico) finished second (1.65m), followed by junior Olivia Mabbett (Milford, N.H.) in fifth (1.55m). In the shot put, senior Kendra Covington (Torrington, Conn.) took third (10.82m), followed by freshman Samantha DeSouza (Sebago, Maine) in fifth (10.45m). In the weight throw, it was Covington in second (14.26m), followed by junior Savannah Drowne (Athol, Mass.) in fourth (13.11m).

Freshman Stephanie Phoenix (Wallingford, Conn.) rounded out the top-five finishes in field events, with a third-place finish in the pole vault (3.05m).

On the track, junior Julia Cormier (Northwood, N.H.) cashed in a pair of top-five finishes, as she took fourth in the 800 meters (2:41.10) and fifth in the mile (5:44.40). She had company in the 800 meters, as junior Rebecca Zylak (Goffstown, N.H.) placed fifth (2:45.24).

The Ravens had two in the top five of the 3000 meters, as sophomore Marissa Farago (Salisbury, Mass.) took third (11:22.19), followed by sophomore Lauren Stankiewicz (Naugatuck, Conn.). Elsewhere, freshman Alana Thompson (Westampton, N.J.) chalked up a second-place finish in the 600 meters (1:43.22).

The Ravens return to action on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 25-26, when they travel to Boston University for the John Thomas Terrier Classic.
