Mabbett Sets School High Jump Record, Women’s Track & Field Fourth After First Day of Elm City Challenge

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (December 1, 2017) – Sophomore Olivia Mabbett (Milford, N.H.) opened the season in style for the Franklin Pierce University women's track & field team on Friday, as she established a new school record in the high jump on the first day of the Elm City Challenge, hosted by Southern Connecticut State.

Franklin Pierce had seven individuals and a relay team score points on Friday at the Moore Field House. It added up to 28 points for the Ravens, which was good enough for fourth place, out of the seven teams which scored on the day. Host SCSU led the way after the first day of the two-day event, with 48 points, and was followed by American International in second (38 points) and New Haven in third (32 points).

Mabbett cleared 1.57 meters to establish the new school high-jump record for the Ravens. It was good enough for a fourth-place finish, to collect four points.

Two other Ravens chalked up fourth-place finishes as well on Friday. In the pole vault, junior Karlee Daub (Hershey, Pa.) got up and over 2.30 meters to pick up four points. In the 600 meters, the four points came courtesy of a run of 1:45.67 from freshman Megan Holland (Clermont, Fla.).

Holland was one of three Franklin Pierce runners to score in the 600 meters. She was followed by a pair of freshmen, as Marisa Carbone (Scarborough, Maine) took sixth place (1:56.20) for two points and Ashley Haluch (Enfield, Conn.) placed seventh (2:03.79) for one point.

For her part, Daub also picked up a point in the high jump, behind Mabbett. Daub got herself over the bar at 1.45 meters, to finish sixth.

Two other Franklin Pierce individuals picked up one point apiece with sixth-place finishes. In the long jump, Lilian Baah (Danielson, Conn.) opened her junior season with a leap of 5.17 meters. In the 55-meter dash preliminaries, freshman Alyssa Harris (Billerica, Mass.) opened her career with a run of 7.45 seconds to qualify for the final in the sixth position. Harris was nothing if not consistent, as she turned in another 7.45 in the final.

The most damage of the day for the Ravens though came in the distance medley relay, where they collected eight points with a second-place finish. A lineup of sophomore Julia Cormier (Northwood, N.H.) to senior Natalie Davies (Ware, Mass.) to Holland to sophomore Rebecca Zylak (Goffstown, N.H.) turned in a time of 13:21.12.

The Elm City Challenge will wrap up on Saturday at SCSU.
