Quinn Shines for Women’s Track & Field on First Day of NE10 Championships
NORTHAMPTION, Mass. (February 17, 2018) – Locked in a back-and-forth competition, senior Emily Quinn (West Bridgewater, Mass.) ultimately threw down a second-place finish in the weight throw on Saturday to lead the Franklin Pierce University women's track & field team on the first day of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships. The two-day meet is being held on the campus of Smith College, and hosted by American International College.
Through the first day of competition, the Ravens are tied for sixth out of 12 scoring teams, with eight points. At the top of the field, Stonehill (59 points) leads the way through Saturday's action. The Skyhawks are followed by Southern Connecticut State (45 points) in second and Assumption (44 points) in third.
All eight of Franklin Pierce's points came via the work of Quinn, who sat second heading into the final round of throws, but then got bumped back down to fourth place. The senior responded though, with a final heave of 17.26 meters to reclaim second place and pick up the eight points for the team. For Quinn, such a high finish at the NE10 Championships was the culmination of a career which has evolved greatly over the course of four years.
"Quinn showed that she brings it when it matters most," said head coach Zach Emerson. "I'm so proud of her. It was a phenomenal competition."
Behind Quinn in the weight throw, a pair of other Ravens did not score, but still threw out personal-best marks. Junior Kendra Covington (Torrington, Conn.) posted a throw of 13.92 meters to finish 12th, while sophomore Savannah Drowne (Athol, Mass.) notched a mark of 13.49 meters to place 14th.
Graduate student Nicole Galewski (Whitman, Mass.) started extremely strong in the pentathlon, as she won the multi-event's edition of the 60-meter hurdles with a run of 9.41. Unfortunately, she was then unable to cleanly clear a height in the high jump, which dashed her chances of scoring in the pentathlon, as she ultimately finished 11th. Galewski is expected to be competitive on Sunday in the high jump and will also anchor the 4x400-meter relay.
Elsewhere, freshman Marissa Farago (Salisbury, Mass.) put together a solid run in the 5000 meters. She turned in a time of 18:57.92 to finish 11th, and was just 30 seconds behind the final scoring spot in the event.
The NE10 Championships wrap up on Sunday at Smith College.
