Quintet of Victories, Two Program Records, Lead Women’s Track & Field to Win at PSU Winter Classic

PLYMOUTH, N.H. (December 9, 2016) – The Franklin Pierce University women's track & field team chalked up five event victories and a pair of school records on Friday, en route to finishing first (out of six teams) at the PSU Winter Classic, hosted by Plymouth State University.

In all, Franklin Pierce would pile up 135 points on the day, good for a 36-point win over fellow Northeast-10 Conference member Southern New Hampshire, which finished second with 99 points. The Ravens racked up 11 top-three finishes on the day.

Of the five event wins, two came on the track, while three came in field events. Junior Emily Quinn (West Bridgewater, Mass.) led the way in the field events by winning the weight throw with a school-record and facility-record throw of 15.32 meters. The mark was also good for second in the NE10 on the young season.

Meanwhile, senior Samantha Toscano (Northwood, N.H.) picked up a win in the long jump with a leap of 5.08 meters, while senior Nicole Galewski (Weymouth, Mass.) tied for first in the high jump by clearing 1.47 meters. Back on the track, Franklin Pierce got a win in the 60-meter dash from freshman Ariana Alvarado (Naugatuck, Conn.), with a time of 8.14 seconds, as well as a victory from junior Alexa Cassara (Bay Shore, N.Y.) in the 800 meters, with a time of 2:29.68.

It was part of an impressive double for Alvarado, who also turned in a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash, with a run of 27.53 seconds. For her part, Cassara's time was part of a one-two punch from the Ravens in the 800 meters, as junior Danielle Crawford (Lowell, Mass.) followed with a time of 2:31.75 to finish second.

Quinn's was one of two program records on the day for Franklin Pierce, with the other also coming in a throwing event, as the Ravens continue to topple their throw records with regularity on the young season. Sophomore Kendra Covington (Torrington, Conn.) tossed the shot put 11.45 meters to lay claim to the school record and finish third in the event.

Three other Ravens turned in top-three finishes on Friday to help the team towards its victory at Plymouth State. Freshman Ayodele Ouhuru (Montvale, N.J.) finished second in the 60-meter dash (8.22), senior Kendra Plant (Cumberland, R.I.) placed third in the weight throw (13.61m) and senior Breigh Souliere (Cumberland, R.I.) took second in the 60-meter hurdles (9.27).

The Ravens return to the track on Friday, Dec. 10, when select athletes travel to the Jay Carisella Invite, hosted by Northeastern University in Boston.
