Purves Goes Low in 100m Hurdles Prelims, Women’s Track & Field T10th After First Day of NE10 Championships

EASTON, Mass. (May 6, 2017) – The Franklin Pierce University women's track & field team scored in four different events on Saturday, as the team opened competition at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships, hosted by Stonehill College. Through the first day of the two-day meet, the Ravens are tied for 10th out of 12 scoring teams.

The four scoring performances were enough to tally seven points for the Ravens, who sit in a three-way tie for 10th with Merrimack and Bentley. Up front, host Stonehill (61 points) leads the meet after one day, by a seven-point margin over second-place Southern Connecticut State (54 points). Assumption (42 points) is third.

Franklin Pierce's biggest point total on the day came in the long jump, courtesy of senior Samantha Toscano (Northwood, N.H.). She posted a leap of 5.34 meters, which placed sixth and earned three points.

Two more points came in another field event, as junior Emily Quinn (West Bridgewater, Mass.) posted a hammer throw of 41.93 meters. The throw was good for seventh place to earn two points.

The two remaining points for the Ravens came via a pair of eighth-place finishes out on the track. In the 10,000 meters, freshman Julia Cormier (Northwood, N.H.) picked up a point with an eighth-place run of 40:28.38. Meanwhile, the 4x800-meter relay team placed eighth as well to pick up another point. A quartet of junior Danielle Crawford (Lowell, Mass.), junior Alexa Cassara (Bay Shore, N.Y.), freshman Meghan Tarr (Atkinson, N.H.) and senior Holly Lindoe (Holbrook, N.Y.) turned in a time of 9:56.95.

In addition to the scoring performances on Saturday, a pair of Ravens qualified for Sunday's final in the 100-meter hurdles, via their performances in Saturday's preliminary heats. Freshman Catherine Purves (Dalkeith, Scotland) put together Franklin Pierce's most impressive performance on Saturday, as she won her 100-meter hurdles heat in a blistering time of 14.18 seconds. It was the top qualifying time overall, met the NCAA Championships provisional qualifying mark in the event and was good enough to tie for the best time in the East Region.

Purves will be joined in the 100-meter hurdles final by senior Breigh Souliere (Cumberland, R.I.). Souliere put together a run of 14.91 seconds, which was good for third in her heat and sixth overall. The time currently ranks eighth in the East Region.

The NE10 Championships will conclude on Sunday.
