Purves Leads Women’s Track & Field at George Davis Invitational

LOWELL, Mass. (April 22, 2017) – Freshman Catherine Purves (Dalkeith, Scotland) laid down the East Region's fastest time so far this spring in the 400-meter hurdles on Saturday, leading the way for the Franklin Pierce University women's track & field team at the George Davis Invitational, hosted by the University of Massachusetts Lowell.

Purves scorched around the track in a time of 1:00.88 to win the 400-meter hurdles in the Mill City on Saturday. The time ranks 17th in the nation and is the fastest mark so far this season in both in the Northeast-10 Conference and in the East Region. Purves, who had already met the NCAA Championships provisional qualifying mark, as well as the NEICAAA Championships qualifying mark, established a new school record with the run.

Much of Franklin Pierce's remaining success on Saturday came in field events. In the triple jump, sophomore Lilian Baah (Danielson, Conn.) finished fourth with a mark of 10.76 meters, which ranks ninth in the NE10, while senior Nicole Galewski (Whitman, Mass.) took second in the long jump with a leap of 5.20 meters, which is tied for 10th in the NE10. Meanwhile, senior Samantha Toscano (Northwood, N.H.) won the long jump at 5.28 meters, which would rank ninth in the NE10, were Toscano not already fifth in the event.

In the hammer throw, junior Emily Quinn (West Bridgewater, Mass.) was less than a meter off her school-record throw from Friday, as she placed third at 49.69 meters.

Back on the track, senior Breigh Souliere (Cumberland, R.I.) moved up to fifth in the NE10 and ninth in the East Region by finishing third in the 100-meter hurdles, with a time of 15.25 seconds.

The Ravens return to the track on April 27-29, when they travel to Philadelphia for the storied Penn Relays, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.
