Demers Triple Jump Leads Way for Women’s Track & Field at Tufts Stampede

4x200-meter relay collects a point as well

Demers Demers came up just four centimeters shy of her best triple jump of the season on Saturday at Tufts.

MEDFORD, Mass. (February 2, 2013) – Freshman Danielle Demers (Auburn, Maine) hopped, skipped and jumped 10.61 meters inside the Gantcher Center on Saturday afternoon to finish sixth in the triple jump for the Franklin Pierce University women's track and field team at the Tufts Stampede. Franklin Pierce picked up four points on the day to finish 19th in the 24-team meet.

Demers' jump was just four centimeters shy of her best triple jump so far this winter (10.65m), set on Dec. 1 at the Smith College Winter Classic. Heading into the weekend, she ranked ninth in the Northeast-10 Conference in the event. Demers earned three of the Ravens' four points on the afternoon by herself with the result.

The Tufts meet featured a 4x200-meter relay, which is where Franklin Pierce picked up its remaining point with a ninth-place finish (1:56.32). The relay squad featured a lineup of freshman Nicki Zeigler (Circleville, N.Y.) to freshman Hadley Doubleday (Plymouth, Mass.) to freshman Jackie Price (Brick, N.J.) to junior Jannice Sundqvist (Harnosand, Sweden).

Two individuals picked up additional top-10 finishes for the Ravens on Saturday, though they did not procure any further points. Sundqvist placed ninth in the 400-meter dash (1:01.60), while freshman Ashley Maresca (Brant Lake, N.Y.) finished 10th in the 800 meters (2:34.19). Maresca's time knocked just less than five seconds (4.99) off her best time of the season in the event.

Host Tufts (166 points) posted an 11-point victory over Massachusetts Institute of Technology (155) in the meet. The two schools blew out the rest of the field, as Williams (95), Rhode Island College (62) and Saint Rose (45) rounded out the top five.

The Ravens hit the track twice next weekend: on Friday, Feb. 8 at the BU Valentine's Day Meet and on Saturday, Feb. 9 at the MIT Co-Ed Invite. The meets will be the final tune-ups of the indoor season before the Northeast-10 Championship on Feb. 16.
