Women’s Tennis Rolls over Saint Anselm, 7-0, Moves to Brink of Postseason Berth

RINDGE, N.H. (October 10, 2019) – After a 7-0 win at home against Northeast-10 Conference foe Saint Anselm on Thursday afternoon, the Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team is on the verge of accomplishing something not before achieved in program history. The Ravens need only one win from their final two NE10 matches to procure the first-ever postseason berth in team history.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improved to 8-3 (5-3 NE10), while Saint Anselm fell to 3-9 (1-8 NE10). The Ravens could also clinch a postseason berth if Assumption were to lose either of its final two NE10 matches. Franklin Pierce and Assumption will meet head-to-head on Oct. 19, in the regular-season finale for both squads.

Thursday proved to be a relative cakewalk for Franklin Pierce, as the Ravens rolled to a shutout of the Hawks without ever dropping a set. The crimson and grey lost just four games while taking victories in all three doubles matches. At first doubles, graduate student Himani Mor (Sonipat, India) and freshman Liria Loria (La Paz, Bolivia) blanked Saint Anselm senior Kaitlin Hughes and sophomore Emily Jacy, 6-0. At second doubles, it was a 6-1 triumph for freshmen Lauren Alvarez Tello (Vigo, Spain) and Jazmin Flood (Laredo, Texas) over junior Maikah Bulpitt and freshman Anastasia Kapothanasis. At third doubles, freshman Ashley Flood (Laredo, Texas) and senior Brigid Washburn (Greentown, Pa.) chalked up a 6-3 win over freshman Abby Parke and junior Parker Petruney.

It was more of the same in singles play, where Franklin Pierce surrendered more than three games in only one of the 11 sets played. At first singles, Mor took care of Hughes, 6-3, 6-1. At second singles, Loria breezed past Kapothanasis, 6-2, 6-0. At third singles, it was a 6-1, 6-1 cruise for Alvarez Tello over Jacy. Ashley Flood had the sternest singles test of the day, but still prevailed over Bulpitt at fourth singles, 6-4, 6-3. In the pro set format at fifth singles, Jazmin Flood tallied a victory over junior Dominique Bolduc, 8-3. At sixth singles, it was a 6-2, 6-0 win for freshman Jillian Pagliuca (Taunton, Mass.) over sophomore Josie Hulbert.

The Ravens return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 12, when they remain home to host Stonehill in an NE10 contest at noon in Rindge.
