Women’s Tennis Closes out Season with 6-3 Loss at Nichols

DUDLEY, Mass. (April 23, 2019)  The Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team closed out its 2018-19 campaign on Tuesday afternoon with a 6-3, non-conference loss at Nichols.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce wraps up the season at 2-19, while Nichols improves to 15-1.

Franklin Pierce took one of the three doubles matches to notch its first point of the day. At first doubles, it was a 6-4 win for juniors Alana Wyatt (Worcester, Mass.) and Brigid Washburn (Greentown, Pa.) over Nichols junior Lindsey Kaplan and sophomore Juliana Herrera. Freshman Grayson LaCroix (Cherry Valley, Mass.) and junior Sarah Rich (Windham, Maine) also put together a strong effort at second doubles, but dropped a 6-4 decision to juniors Danielle Mandel and Rachel McDonald.

The Ravens' remaining two points came at third singles and sixth singles. At third singles, Rich took the first set 6-4 and the second set was tied at 1-1 before Kaplan retired with an injury. At sixth singles, there was high drama in a first-set tiebreak which went the distance and then some, with senior Shelli Safran (Boxborough, Mass.) ultimately prevailing with a 7-6 (10), 6-1 win in her collegiate finale, over freshman Victoria Lussier.

Nichols took each of the remaining four singles matches in straight sets. LaCroix was a tough out at second singles, but ultimately dropped a 6-3, 7-6 (6) decision to Herrera.
