Women’s Soccer Plays to 1-1 (2 OT) Draw at Assumption in Season Finale

WORCESTER, Mass. (November 5, 2019) -- In need of a win to have a chance to extend its season on Tuesday afternoon, the Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team came up just short on the road at Assumption. Trailing 1-0 late, the Ravens got an 82nd-minute equalizer from senior forward Veronica Marques (Sao Paulo, Brazil), but neither team was able to find a game-winning goal through two overtimes, as the two sides played to a 1-1 tie in Northeast-10 Conference action at Multi-Sport Stadium.

With the tie, Franklin Pierce concludes its season at 6-8-2 (5-7-1 NE10), while Assumption wraps things up at 7-4-5 (4-4-5 NE10). After meeting in the title game of the NE10 Championship a year ago, both teams missed out on the postseason in 2019.

Assumption scored first, with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Sophomore midfielder Diana Bruggeman had an unassisted goal, her sixth of the season, in the 35th minute to put the Greyhounds ahead 1-0. The score would stay there for the remainder of the first half and deep into the second half.

Franklin Pierce would eventually even things at 1-1 in the 82nd minute, with just 8:56 to play in regulation. It was the sixth of the season for Marques to tie things up, while senior midfielder Gabi Pereira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) provided the assist.

As it turned out in the end, a game-winning goal would not have put either team through to the postseason. The results around the rest of the NE10 on Tuesday would have left both teams on the outside looking in, regardless of the outcome in Worcester. Still, the entirety of both overtimes went scoreless, as both teams closed out their season with a 1-1 draw.

The game was statistically even throughout. Each team attempted 18 shots on the afternoon, while Assumption held a slim, 10-9 advantage in shots on goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Casey Kane (Millis, Mass.) finished with nine saves against 10 shots on goal in the tie (4-6-2) for Franklin Pierce. Senior Alexis Nason (5-4-5) stopped eight of nine shots at the other end for Assumption.
