Women’s Soccer Keeps Postseason Hopes Alive with 2-1 Win at Le Moyne

Jessica Magerman

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (November 2, 2019) -- The Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team took a 2-1 win against the Le Moyne Dolphins in Northeast-10 Conference play on the road at Ted Grant Field on Saturday. Sophomore midfielder Jessica Magerman (Bellingham, Mass.) and senior forward Veronica Marques (Sao Paulo, Brazil) both put home goals in the first half for the Ravens, who led the way statistically throughout.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 6-8-1 (5-7-0 NE10) and keeps its postseason hopes alive heading into its final regular-season game. The Ravens will head to Assumption on Tuesday, Nov. 5, for a 2 p.m. match in Worcester, Mass., to close out the regular season. Franklin Pierce will need a win, plus some help elsewhere on Tuesday to qualify for the NE10 Championship on the season's final day.

With the loss, Le Moyne fell to 1-14-1 (0-11-1 NE10).

Just 3:09 into the game, Magerman opened the scoring with her fifth goal of the season. She put home a shot from 12 yards out on the right side, with an assist from Marques, who provided the feed from the top of the penalty area.

In the 29th minute, it was Marques' turn. She did much of the work herself on the way to adding her fifth of the season as well. She was able to dribble through the defense on the left side of the box before putting a shot into the lower-right corner for an unassisted tally. Franklin Pierce would hold the 2-0 lead through the remainder of the first half.

Le Moyne put home a long-range strike for its only goal of the game in the 49th minute, just 3:28 into the second half. Sophomore midfielder Ali Greco tucked a shot under the crossbar from 35 yards out for her second goal of the season, while sophomore forward Hannah Brown-Tice provided the assist.

Freshman goalkeeper Ithaisa Viñoly (Canary Islands, Spain) finished with two saves against three shots on goal to pick up the win (2-2-0) in the Franklin Pierce net. Senior Shannon Bennison (1-14-1) made five saves against seven shots in a losing effort for Le Moyne.

Franklin Pierce posted advantages of 13-8 in shot attempts and 7-3 in shots on goal on the afternoon.
