Women’s Soccer Falls at New Haven Late, 2-1

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (October 12, 2019) – A pair of goals against in the final 31 minutes sunk the Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team on the road on Saturday afternoon. Junior forward Samantha Roth put home the game-winner in the 82nd minute, as host New Haven rallied from a 1-0 second-half deficit to deal the Ravens a 2-1 defeat in Northeast-10 Conference play at Kathy Zolad Stadium. Sophomore midfielder Jessica Magerman (Bellingham, Mass.) had the lone score in the loss for Franklin Pierce.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 4-6-1 (3-5-0 NE10), while New Haven improves to 3-8-1 (2-6-0 NE10).

After the first half went scoreless, Franklin Pierce opened the scoring just 2:12 into the second half, in the 48th minute. Senior forward Veronica Marques (Sao Paulo, Brazil) set up the fourth of the season for Magerman to put the Ravens in front.

Franklin Pierce would hold the lead for nearly 12 minutes, before New Haven drew level in the 60th minute. It was the team-leading fifth of the season for junior midfielder Jenna Peduzzi, off of assists from sophomore midfielder Mackenzie Myers and senior midfielder Tana Tufts.

The game then stayed locked at 1-1 into the final 10 minutes, before the homestanding Chargers eventually struck for the game-winner with 8:23 to play. The 82nd-minute game-winner was the third goal of the campaign for Roth, while senior back Sorcha Ni Bhraonain provided the assist.

The game was a tale of two halves statistically, with things largely evening out in the end. New Haven enjoyed an 11-5 advantage in shot attempts in the first half, while Franklin Pierce answered with a 15-7 margin in the second half to enjoy a 20-18 edge for the game. New Haven posted a 10-8 advantage in shots on goal, while Franklin Pierce held a 10-4 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Casey Kane (Millis, Mass.) finished with eight saves against 10 shots on goal and suffered the loss (3-4-1) in front of the Franklin Pierce net. At the other end of the field, junior Paige Davis (3-7-1) stopped seven of eight shots to pick up the win for New Haven.

The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 19, when they travel to Adelphi for an NE10 contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Motamed Field in Garden City, N.Y.
