Women’s Soccer Tripped up in Overtime by Saint Anselm, 2-1

RINDGE, N.H. (October 8, 2019) – Overtime was not long-lived at Sodexo Field on Tuesday night. After the Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team equalized in the 59th minute to force the extra session, it took Saint Anselm just 22 seconds into overtime to put home the game-winner and come away with a 2-1 victory in the Northeast-10 contest. Senior midfielder Caly Farina potted both goals for the visiting Hawks, while sophomore forward Ciersten Palumbo (Holbrook, N.Y.) struck for Franklin Pierce.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 4-5-1 (3-4-0 NE10), while Saint Anselm improves to 5-2-4 (2-2-3 NE10).

The game-winner came on the first possession of the overtime period, as Saint Anselm quickly moved the ball down the field and scored in just 22 seconds. The goal came amid a scramble in front of the Franklin Pierce net, in the right side of the six-yard box. Farina was able to find the ball before the defense could, and poked her second goal of the night into the right side of the net to set off the celebration.

Earlier in the night's proceedings, Farina also opened the scoring, prior to halftime, in the 42nd minute. Sophomore midfielder Regan Pratt lofted a long pass ahead from the midfield. Farina put herself on the other end of the feed, which left her behind the defense and in the right side of the penalty area. Farina put her shot across the goal and into the left side of the net to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

Franklin Pierce would equalize just shy of the hour mark, in the 59th minute. With the ball near the end line on the left-wing side, freshman midfielder Camille Sahirul (North Haven, Conn.) slipped a pass through to the top of the six-yard box, in front of the left post. Crashing hard to the post was Palumbo, who got her foot to the feed and hammered it home for her fourth goal of the season to level the score at 1-1.

The final half-hour then went scoreless, which set the stage for Farina's overtime heroics.

Sophomore goalkeeper Casey Kane (Millis, Mass.) made four saves against six shots on goal and suffered the loss (3-3-1) in net for Franklin Pierce. Junior Payton Wildrick (5-2-4) stopped three of four shots to pick up the win for Saint Anselm.

The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 12, when they travel to New Haven for an NE10 contest. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Zolad Stadium in West Haven, Conn.
