LIU Post Staves Off SNHU in PKs (4-3) After 0-0 Tie (2 OT) at NCAA Championship

RINDGE, N.H. (November 9, 2018) – The chances were few and far between in the first round opener at the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship East Regional at Sodexo Field on Friday, on the campus of Franklin Pierce University. Neither fourth-seeded Southern New Hampshire nor fifth-seeded LIU Post could find the net in regulation. Neither could find the net in a pair of overtime periods either, as the game went into the books as a 0-0 tie. Ultimately, LIU Post would advance to the second round via a 4-3 victory in penalty kicks. Junior forward Julia Duffy provided the strike which sent the Pioneers through to the second round.

After the draw, LIU Post moves to 13-3-4. SNHU’s fifth NCAA Championship appearance comes to a close, with the Penmen’s final record standing at 14-4-3. LIU Post advances to play in the second round on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Pioneers will take on the winner of Friday’s second game, which features top seed and host Franklin Pierce against eighth-seeded Caldwell.

LIU Post got things started on the right foot right off the bat in the penalty-kick shootout, as senior goalkeeper Hillevi Eklow dove to her left to stymie the shot of SNHU sophomore midfielder Allyson Patterson. LIU Post would put home each of its first three kicks, while Eklow made another stop against junior midfielder Shae Roys. It ultimately came down to the foot of Carney, LIU Post’s fifth kicker, who put her shot into the right side of the net to push the Pioneers through to the second round.

Earlier, after all of regulation had gone scoreless, SNHU had the best chance of either overtime, late in the first extra session. In the 98th minute, the ball came to Roys about 15 yards in front of the goal. She had a clear shooting lane and uncorked a shot, but it was snagged by Eklow to keep the contest scoreless.

LIU Post notched advantages of 15-8 in shot attempts and 5-3 in shots on goal in the game.

Eklow (12-3-4) stopped all three shots on her goal to post her 10th shutout of the season. SNHU freshman goalkeeper Hannah Rose (13-4-3) posted a five-save shutout of her own, her sixth of the season.
