WINCHENDON, Mass. (November 16, 2019) – A day after an early-season statement win, the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team was subjected to the talents of Sacred Heart's Jayne Lewis on Saturday afternoon at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. The senior forward put home three goals, including the game-winner on the power play in the third period, as Sacred Heart forced a split of the weekend series with a 4-2 win over the Ravens in New England Women's Hockey Alliance play. Freshman forward Reece Diener (McKinney, Texas) scored twice in defeat for Franklin Pierce, to record her first career multiple-goal game.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 7-3-0 (6-2-0 NEWHA) and suffers its first loss on home ice this season (5-1-0). Sacred Heart improves to 4-8-0 (4-2-0 NEWHA) with the victory. The two teams will meet again at Sacred Heart for a weekend series on Friday, Jan. 31 and Saturday, Feb. 1.

As was the case on Friday night, the Ravens opened the scoring early on Saturday afternoon, this time 94 seconds in. From the right-wing corner, freshman forward Becca Kniss (Eden Prairie, Minn.) centered to Diener at the edge of the right circle. Diener had to spin after corralling the puck, unleashed her shot as she did so, and fired it between the pads of Sacred Heart sophomore goaltender Frankie Sanchez for her third goal of the season.

Sacred Heart evened things up at the 6:30 mark, as Lewis capitalized on a careless attempt to clear the zone by the Franklin Pierce defense. Freshman defenseman Bethany Ross (Canton, Mich.) attempted to go across the middle on her outlet pass, but it was easily intercepted by Lewis at the blue line. Lewis came in all alone and snapped her fourth goal of the campaign into the top-right corner.

Diener's second of the afternoon came in a delayed-penalty situation at the 14:32 mark and put the Ravens out front 2-1 heading into the first intermission. With the puck in the left-wing circle, freshman forward Cassidy Jones (Stillwater, Minn.) slipped a pass into the middle for senior defenseman Delaney Guimont (Bedford, N.H.). Guimont flipped a backhand attempt towards the net which was turned aside, but Diener cleaned up the rebound.

Sophomore forward Anna Klein did the heavy lifting for Sacred Heart on the goal which tied things at 2-2 at 13:24 of the second period. After junior defenseman Marissa Letizio gained possession in her own end, Klein took the puck and took off on a coast-to-coast rush down the right-wing side. She eventually circled behind the Franklin Pierce net and fed a centering pass to Lewis, who had the one-time finish for her second goal of the game.

The game would stay knotted at 2-2 into the third period, when Lewis capped her second career hat trick with a power-play score at 5:22. Senior defenseman Olivia Bryant took the original shot on the play, from the right point, which was turned aside. Senior forward Maddie Bishop put a shot on net from the top of the crease on the rebound, which was also saved. Amid the scramble for the next rebound, the puck deflected off the stick of Klein and over to Lewis, who jammed it home at the left post for the eventual game-winner.

Sacred Heart put things on ice with an empty-net tally at 19:42. Bishop blocked a dump-in attempt at her own blue line and sprung herself the other way on a breakaway for her third goal of the season.

Franklin Pierce sophomore goaltender Emme Ostrander (Westborough, Mass.) finished with 28 saves against 31 shots and suffered the loss (5-3-0) in the Franklin Pierce net. Sanchez (4-8-0) made 30 stops against 32 shots in the win for Sacred Heart.

The Ravens return to the ice on Tuesday, Nov. 19, when they remain home to host Saint Anselm in an NEWHA contest. Opening faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.
