Women’s Ice Hockey Suffers 3-0 Exhibition Setback at UMass Boston

Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey

BOSTON (October 25, 2019) – The Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team piled up at 35-22 advantage in shots on Friday night, but was unable to solve the opposing goaltender at the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink. Instead, senior netminder Caty Flagg backstopped host UMass Boston to a 3-0 victory in an exhibition contest.

For Franklin Pierce, which is in the midst of a stretch of three weeks between regular-season games, the contest served as a chance to see some game action prior to next weekend's home-and-home series with rival Saint Anselm. For UMass Boston, the exhibition was a final tune-up before the team opens its season next weekend with a road trip to Stevenson and Neumann.

The Ravens looked in control at times, as they were able to amass a 26-13 advantage in shots through two periods. However, the crimson and grey also looked disjointed at times, including on the opening shift. Former Raven Kelsey Ryan opened the scoring just 19 seconds into the proceedings to put UMass Boston in front early. Now in her junior season with the Beacons, Ryan finished things off after assists from senior defenseman Bri Colucci and sophomore forward Cailey Kozich.

The game would go without another goal until the third period, though Franklin Pierce was not without its chances to level the score. The Ravens hit three pipes in the opening 20 minutes and ran up a 17-8 advantage in shots in the second period alone, but could not put the puck past Flagg. Franklin Pierce ultimately came up empty on four power-play opportunities on the night and was only able to generate four shots on the man-advantage.

A pair of goals in the first five minutes of the third period salted things away for the Beacons, who did a better job of locking things up defensively in the final stanza, as each team finished the period with nine shots on goal. First, working on a 4-on-3 power play, junior forward Katie Leffler found the net with a long shot through traffic from the middle of the blue line, as UMass Boston cashed in on the third of its four power-play chances on the night. Freshman defenseman Addie Budington and junior defenseman Jane Ann Drill picked up the assists at 1:31.

Franklin Pierce would earn a power play shortly thereafter, but it would be the Beacons who struck, for a shorthanded tally, to cap the scoring at the 4:11 mark. Kozich took the shot from the right-wing side, and junior goaltender Kelly Turney (Fort Gratiot, Mich.) got a piece of it, but not enough to keep the puck out of the net. Leffler and Budington provided the helpers as all three players picked up their second point of the night.

Senior goaltender Jessica Strack (Reading, Mass.) started in net for Franklin Pierce, made 10 saves against 11 shots over the opening 33:04 and took the loss. Turney made nine saves against 11 shots the rest of the way.

For UMass Boston, Flagg notched the shutout by stopping all 35 shots sent her way.

The Ravens are back in action on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1-2, when they will meet NEWHA foe Saint Anselm in a home-and-home weekend series. Opening faceoff is set for 4 p.m. on Friday at Franklin Pierce and 1 p.m. on Saturday at Saint Anselm.
