Parker Joins 100-Point Club, Women’s Ice Hockey Wins at Post, 5-1

Bridgette Prentiss

SHELTON, Conn. (February 15, 2020) – The Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team took care of business again on Saturday afternoon to cap the regular season with a 5-1 win over Post in New England Women's Hockey Alliance play at Sports Center of Connecticut. It was the 21st win of the season for the Ravens, which established a new program record. Junior forward Haley Parker (Londonderry, N.H.) had a goal and an assist, including the 100th point of her career (43-57-100), while senior defenseman Bridgette Prentiss (Buffalo, N.Y.) had a pair of goals and an assist in the victory.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 21-10-0 (13-7-0 NEWHA) and locked up the second seed -- and thus a first-round bye -- in next week's NEWHA Tournament. With the loss, last-place Post falls to 12-22-0 (2-18-0 NEWHA). Franklin Pierce will next be in action in the semifinal round of the NEWHA Tournament, which is slated for Saturday, Feb. 22, and will be hosted at Saint Anselm's Sullivan Arena. Game time and opponent are to be determined.

With the Ravens setting a new program record for wins in a season, their goaltender did the same at the individual level. Sophomore Emme Ostrander (Westborough, Mass.) finished with 22 saves against 23 shots to pick up her program-record 16th win of the season (16-10-0).

Franklin Pierce went 3-for-8 on the power play on the day, including the first period's only goal, at the 12:51 mark. It was Prentiss who got the scoring started, with her team-leading 18th goal of the season, off of assists from freshman forward Katelyn Brightbill (Annville, Pa.) and freshman defenseman Bethany Ross (Canton, Mich.).

Another power-play goal, the only goal of the second frame, doubled the lead to 2-0 at 3:59. From the left side, Parker sent the puck to the middle of the blue line for Prentiss. Prentiss' shot was met with a pad save by Post senior goaltender Jenna Baumgartner, but the Eagles' defense did little to clear the rebound. Instead, freshman forward Becca Kniss (Eden Prairie, Minn.) was left unattended in the right circle with time to collect the puck, set and fire home her 13th goal of the campaign.

At 5:30 of the third, Franklin Pierce was awarded a penalty shot, after Post freshman defenseman Madison Turley covered the puck in the crease. It was an unlikely candidate for the Ravens, as head coach David Stockdale sent Prentiss to take the attempt. Prentiss went to her right and flipped a backhand shot around Baumgartner, which caught iron at both posts before finally meandering over the line to make it a 3-0 game.

The Eagles cut the gap to 3-1 at the 10:40 mark. After a collision resulted in a pile of bodies on the left-wing half wall, freshman forward Victoria Paton scooped up a loose puck in the left circle, skated towards the net and snapped home her sixth goal of the campaign. Freshman defenseman Jenna Abeyta picked up the lone assist.

Franklin Pierce added a pair of insurance markers down the stretch to create the 5-1 final. On the power play at 14:51, sophomore defenseman Kiki Doucette (Bridgewater, Mass.) cleaned up a rebound at the left post for her third goal of the year. Finally, a shot by freshman forward Ava Kison (Eau Claire, Wis.) slipped behind Baumgartner and lay in the crease. Parker was on the scene and brushed it over the line at 18:03 for her 17th goal of the season, and the 100th point of her career. She became the program's fifth member of the 100-point club and was the second to reach the plateau in as many days.

Baumgartner (10-9-0) piled up 57 saves against 62 shots, and suffered the loss in front of the Post net.
