Prentiss Hat Trick Powers Women’s Ice Hockey in 6-2 Win at Plymouth State

Bridgette Prentiss

PLYMOUTH, N.H. (January 17, 2020) – Things were a lot less dramatic this time around between the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team and Plymouth State. When the two met at Franklin Pierce in November, the Ravens needed three extra-attacker goals to erase a 4-1 deficit in the final four minutes on the way to an overtime victory. In contrast, on Friday night at Plymouth State, Franklin Pierce never trailed and pulled away in the third period for a 6-2, non-conference victory over the Panthers at Hanaway Rink. Senior defenseman Bridgette Prentiss (Buffalo, N.Y.) notched a hat trick and added an assist as well, to match her career high with four points.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 15-6-0 and has won four in a row for the third time this season, while Plymouth State falls to 3-11-0.

Prentiss is the team's leading scorer through 21 games, with 30 points on 11 goals and 19 assists. With 10 games left on the regular-season schedule, the senior finds herself within striking distance of the Franklin Pierce single-season records for both assists (23) and points (40), both of which were set by Haley Parker a year ago.

Franklin Pierce used a pair of power-play goals in the final five minutes of the first period to open up a 2-0 lead headed into the first intermission. First, junior forward Marissa Massaro (Brockton, Mass.) paid the price out front, as she was dumped to the ice while knocking home a rebound at the top of the crease to open the scoring. Freshman forward Katelyn Brightbill (Annville, Pa.) and Prentiss had the assists on Massaro's fourth goal of the season, at the 15:55 mark.

Less than two minutes later, the Ravens made it 2-for-3 on the man-advantage in the opening frame. This time, Prentiss took care of the scoring herself, as she sniped the top-right corner of the net from the top of the right circle for her ninth goal of the campaign. Freshman defenseman Stefanie Caban (Fitchburg, Mass.) and Massaro provided the helpers at 17:53.

Plymouth State got a fortuitous bounce early in the second period to pick up a power-play goal of its own and cut the lead to 2-1. After a shot was sent towards the net from the right side, several players from each team were hacking at the loose puck outside the crease on the right-wing side. Ultimately, the puck popped up in the air, and senior forward Caitlin Connor was able to showcase her hand-eye coordination by using her stick to bat the puck out of midair and into the net for her fifth of the season at the 3:38 mark.

Moments after killing off a power play, which featured seven shots on goal and a disallowed goal for Franklin Pierce, Plymouth State evened things up at the 14:42 mark. Sophomore defenseman Hannah Bradshaw led a rush down the left-wing side and snapped a shot over the shoulder of Franklin Pierce sophomore goaltender Emme Ostrander (Westborough, Mass.). Senior defenseman Amanda McPhearson picked up the lone assist on Bradshaw's second goal of the year.

The game would not stay tied long, as Prentiss picked up another power-play goal, and dismantled the goalie's water bottle in the process, at 16:50. Caban set up her defensive partner in the middle of the right circle and Prentiss took care of business from there for her second score of the night. She rifled a shot upstairs to pop the water bottle off the top of the net behind Plymouth State sophomore goaltender Olivia Petito.

A pair of third-period insurance markers, both on the power play, allowed the Ravens to pull away down the stretch and finish off the 6-2 victory. First, senior defenseman Delaney Guimont (Bedford, N.H.) knocked home a rebound out front for her fourth of the season at 9:58, while Prentiss picked up the lone assist. Later, at 14:43, Prentiss capped off her second career hat trick by jumping on a loose puck and snapping home yet another shot from the top of the right circle.

Freshman forward Cassidy Jones (Stillwater, Minn.) added her second goal of the season, an empty-net tally at 17:59, to round out the scoring.

Ostrander (11-6-0) finished with 18 saves against 20 shots to pick up the win in the Franklin Pierce crease. Petito (0-2-0) stopped 51 of 57 shots at the other end of the ice in the losing effort for Plymouth State.

The Ravens return to the ice on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 24-25, when they return to host Saint Michael's in an NEWHA weekend series. Opening faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon, Mass.
